what to do for dry throat - #39099

Gabriel

I am dealing with this really annoying dry throat lately, and it’s driving me crazy!!! Like, it started a few weeks ago when I was working a lot and maybe didn’t drink enough water, ya know? But now, even when I try to hydrate, it feels like I have a desert in my throat. I wake up at night with this scratchy feeling and sometimes I even cough a bit! Super frustrating. I've tried drinking warm teas but it just gives temporary relief. Also, I noticed that sometimes when I talk too long, it gets worse, ugh! My friend said it could be allergies or maybe even something to do with the air conditioning at work, but I feel like there's gotta be more to it. I don’t have any major health issues otherwise and I'm not taking any medications. I guess I’m just wondering what to do for dry throat besides the basic remedies. Are there any Ayurvedic practices or natural remedies that can really help with this? Like, is there something specific I should be eating or avoiding? I really want to tackle this before it gets worse, so any advice would be great!!! Thx in advance!

Addressing a dry throat situation with Ayurvedic practices will involve considering factors such as your dosha, diet, and lifestyle choices. From an Ayurvedic perspective, a dry throat is often associated with an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which is characterized by dryness and coldness. The air conditioning at work might also be aggravating this. Here’s a plan that might offer you some relief:

First, let’s focus on hydration, but in an ayurvedic way. Drinking plain water may not always provide the lubrication your throat requires. Instead, try warm water infused with a bit of honey and lemon; this combination can soothe the throat while providing a bit of moisturizing. Drink it slowly so you maximize its beneficial effects.

You mentioned that warm teas offer temporary relief. Consider preparing a decoction of licorice root (Mulethi). Boil a small piece of licorice root in a cup of water until it reduces by half, strain and sip warm. Licorice is known for its soothing properties and can help alleviate throat dryness.

In terms of diet, include foods that are naturally moisturizing and nourishing to the body, such as ghee, avocados, and almonds. These foods can balance the Vata dosha with their healthy fats and nourishing qualities. Avoid spicy, dry, or excessively processed foods, which might cause further irritation.

Sesame oil nasya, or nasal drops, can be beneficial too for your throat. Use lukewarm sesame oil—instilling 1-2 drops in each nostril every morning. This practice helps moisturize the throat indirectly by improving nasal lubrication.

If you’re exposed to air conditioning for extended periods, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air, this can prevent irritation caused by dryness. Regular pranayama, especially anulom vilom (alternate nostril breathing), can help strengthen your throat and respiratory system.

Implement these remedies consistently and observe changes. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a qualified Ayurvedic professional for a tailored plan or to rule out any deeper underlying imbalances.
