Can I take Gudmar leaves for my hypothyroid, pre-diabetes, and arthritis conditions? - #53903

Client_3c7ae5
$5

I am a 57 year male. I am on medication for hypothyroid for more than 20 years, on medication (on and off) for uric acid for more than 20 years, pre-diabetic (HBa1c - 6.2/ 6.3) for many years, and also have high LDL (around 120), arthritic on knee joints. My fasting sugar generally remains around 120 and PP normal. But recently fasting sugar has gone up to 134, though I am yet to check PP and HBa1c. I bought raw Gudmar leaves, dried and crushed from my recent trip to south India. Given the above conditions, can I take Gudmar leaves? If so, what should be the dosage?

How long have you been noticing the increase in your fasting sugar levels?:

- Less than 1 week

How would you rate the severity of your knee arthritis pain?:

- Mild — occasional discomfort

What other medications or treatments are you currently using for your conditions?:

- Thyroid and uric acid medication

Have you experienced any side effects from your current medications?:

- No side effects

How is your overall energy level during the day?:

- Poor — very low energy

How often do you monitor your blood sugar levels?:

- Rarely

What is your typical diet like?:

- Balanced with fruits and vegetables

Do you have any known allergies or sensitivities to herbal supplements?:

- Not sure

Yes, you can safely take the raw, crushed Gudmar leaves. Your overall clinical picture is long-standing hypothyroidism, high LDL, elevated uric acid, creeping fasting blood sugar and extremely low energy, it points to a classic Kapha-Meda metabolic block. Your body’s cellular metabolism is sluggish, causing toxins to accumulate as cholesterol, uric acid and unabsorbed glucose. Gudmar is a potent scraping herb that will not only manage your fasting sugar but also help clear the LDL cholesterol. ✓Gudmar Dosage & Preparation Dosage: 1/2 teaspoon (approx. 2-3 grams) of the dried, crushed leaves. Preparation: Boil the leaves in one glass of water until it reduces to half a glass. Strain it to make a fresh decoction (Kwath). Timing: Drink this twice daily, 30 minutes before lunch and dinner. ✓Crucial Medical Precautions The Thyroid Med Gap: Never take this herbal decoction first thing in the morning alongside your thyroid medication. Bitter herbs and tannins can severely interfere with the intestinal absorption of Levothyroxine. You must maintain at least a 2 to 3-hour gap between your thyroid pill and any herbal water. Monitor Your Sugar: Gudmar literally translates to sugar destroyer. It actively blocks sugar absorption in the intestines and stimulates the pancreas. Since you are starting a potent raw herb, you can no longer monitor your blood sugar rarely. Check your fasting and PP levels at least twice a week to ensure it doesn’t drop too low (Hypoglycemia). ✓Addressing the Low Energy & Uric Acid Your severe lack of energy is because your food is converting into metabolic waste (like uric acid and LDL) rather than pure energy. To safely support your Gudmar protocol: Amrutadi Guggulu Dosage: 2 tablets twice daily. Time: 30 minutes after meals with warm water. Action: This classical formulation specifically targets high uric acid, reduces your mild arthritic knee discomfort, and clears metabolic blockages, naturally restoring your energy levels. Thank you so much, Dr. Singh. I have a few questions: 1) Since it is difficult to make the gudmar concoction during lunch hours in weekdays, as I am an office goer, can I take it only before dinner? Or else, is it ok if, for the pre-lunch dose, I take raw crushed leaves dry and for the pre-dinner dose it take the concoction? 2) Since I am not of diabetes medication, is there still a chance of hypoglycaemia? 3) Is it safe to take Amrutadi Guggulu given the medicines that I am already taking? 4) I am taking some homeopathy medicines for my various ailments. Is it safe to have Gudmar and Amrutadi Guggulu along with homeopathy?

1. Yes, taking the dry, crushed leaves is a perfectly acceptable and highly effective alternative. Pre-lunch (At the Office): Swallow 1/2 teaspoon of the dry Gudmar powder with a glass of warm water 30 minutes before your meal. Pre-dinner (At Home): Continue with the freshly boiled decoction (Kwath) 30 minutes before dinner. This hybrid approach ensures you maintain the necessary dosage without disrupting your professional schedule. 2. The Risk of Hypoglycemia Because you are not taking chemical allopathic diabetes medications, the risk of a dangerous, sudden hypoglycemic crash is extremely low. However, as your body adjusts to this new herbal intervention, you might experience a mild, temporary drop in blood sugar (presenting as slight dizziness or sudden hunger) during the first week or two. This is why monitoring your fasting and PP levels a couple of times a week initially is still highly recommended to understand exactly how your body is responding. 3. Safety of Amrutadi Guggulu with Current Medicines Amrutadi Guggulu is exceptionally safe and highly beneficial to take alongside your current thyroid and uric acid medications. Its primary ingredient, Giloy, is a master immunomodulator and metabolic corrector which will complement your current treatment. ✓You must strictly maintain a gap of at least 2 to 3 hours between your morning thyroid pill and your first dose of Amrutadi Guggulu (or any other herbal medicine). 4. Combining Ayurveda and Homeopathy It is entirely safe to take both systems of medicine, provided they are not taken at the exact same time. Homeopathic medicines are highly subtle and are absorbed directly through the mucous membranes under the tongue, requiring a completely clean mouth to work effectively. Strong, bitter Ayurvedic herbs like Gudmar will interfere with this absorption if taken together. ✓Always maintain a strict gap of 30 to 45 minutes between taking your homeopathic remedies and consuming any Ayurvedic medicines or food.

Yes, you can safely use the raw, crushed Gudmar leaves you purchased. Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre) is known as the “sugar destroyer” and is effective for “scraping” excess sugar and cholesterol from the system. Gudmar Dosage & Preparation Dosage: Use 1/2 teaspoon (approximately 2–3 grams) of the dried, crushed leaves. Preparation: Boil the leaves in one glass of water until the liquid reduces to half a glass. Strain it to create a fresh decoction (Kwath). Timing: Drink this twice daily, 30 minutes before your lunch and dinner. Lifestyle Tip Since your energy is poor, ensure you are drinking plenty of warm water throughout the day. This helps the Gudmar and other supplements flush out the uric acid and metabolic waste more efficiently.

Gudmar (Gymnema) is useful for blood sugar control, but in your case (hypothyroid + prediabetes + uric acid + medications), it should be used carefully and in a controlled dose. Yes, you can take Gudmar, but: Do not take it on empty stomach with other medicines Do not take high dose, as it can lower sugar unpredictably Start low and observe: Gudmar leaf powder – ¼ teaspoon once daily after lunch After 1–2 weeks, if well tolerated, you can increase to ¼ teaspoon twice daily after food. Monitor: Check fasting and PP sugar regularly Watch for symptoms like weakness, sweating (low sugar) Important: Continue your thyroid medicine as it is Do not mix too many herbs together at once For overall support: Keep dinner light Daily walking + joint-friendly exercises Reduce sugar and refined carbs At home: Fenugreek seeds (soaked) in morning can also help sugar control (small quantity) Gudmar will help mainly for sugar, but for joints and metabolism, broader management is needed. Regular monitoring is key in your case. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)

Yes you can take gudmar leaves powder because it is excellent for managing fasting sugar spikes gudmar dose - 1/2 tsp twice/day ~take 30 min before breakfast and dinner with warm water ⚠️ gudmar should be taken 2 hours away from your thyroid medications (which you take on empty stomach ) Apart from gudmar which you will use daily , you have to take the prescribed medications consistently for your overall conditions .

Dos - replace wheat and rice with barley or millets , barley is best for diabetes and uric acid Drink warm water all day A 30 min evening walk is essential to manage fasting sugar spikes gudmar Use more dry ginger and turmeric in food they are naturally anti inflammatory for your knee Donts - avoid curd / yogurt switch to diluted buttermilk with cumin Avoid spinach , cauliflower , mushrooms , heavy pulses Avoid day time sleep Avoid salt and refined sugar Important - check your thyroid , monitor your blood sugar weekly if it drops reduce dose of gudmar Long term uric acid can affect kidney , get done your KFT

Yes definitely Gudmar is highly effective for managing blood sugar as it suppresses the taste of sugar and slows glucose absorption. However, you have multiple co-morbidities like hypothyroidism and arthritis, it should be part of a balanced formulation rather than a standalone treatment like gudmar 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 1) gudmar churna - 1/2 teaspoon 15 minutes before lunch and dinner 2) Nisakatakadi kashayam- 15 ml with 45 ml lukewarm water 30 minute before breakfast and dinner 3) chandraprabha vati- 1 tablet after breakfast and dinner 4) shiva gutika - 1 tablet twice daily with water 5) kottamchukkadi thailam- apply to knees before bath 👇👇👇👇👇 Include Barley millets and old rice in your diet vegetables like bitter gourd bottle guard pointed guard drumsticks and leafy green vegetables Include moong dal in your diet 👇👇👇👇👇 Avoid redmi sea foods white sugar refined flour potatoes and excessive sweet fruit like mango Avoid curd instead of use fresh butter milk Drink warm water throughout the day 30 minute brisk walking practice Pranayam like anulom vilom daily

Hello, Given - longstanding hypothyroidism, prediabetes (HbA1c 6.2-6.3), boderline elevated fasting glucose now 134, high LDL, uric acid tendency, mild knee arthritis, and low energy- this looks in Ayurveda like a kapha-vata imbalance with meda dhatu (metabolic tissue) dysfunction and mild ama (metabolic toxins), along with possible agnimandya (sluggish metabolic digestive fire). In simple terms= metabolism is running iineffeiciently, affecting sugar handling, lipids, joints, and energy Can you take Gudmar? Yes, gudmar can be supportive for prediabetes/metabolic balance, but use caution because you are on ongoing thyroid medication and you’ve had variable sugars. Also, raw self prepared herbs can vary in strength Safer approach preferred = use standarized formulation rather than raw leaves Treatment goals -improve insulin sensitivity and support fasting glucose -support healthy lipid metabolism -reduce metabolic sluggishness and improve energy -support joint and mild uric acid related tendencies -protect long term progression towards diabetes For prediabetes/metabolic support -Nisha amalaki tablets= 2 tabs twice daily after meals for 8-12 weeks =supports glucose metabolism, mild antoxidant support, helpful in prediabetes -Gorochanadi gulika = 1 tab twice daily after meals =best for metabolic support If you specially want gudmar If usin raw dried gudmar leaves, use conservatively -start 1/4-1/2 tsp powder once daily, after meals for 1 week -if well tolerated, may increase to 1/2 tsp once or twice daily -take with warm water Important= because gudmar can influence glucose, monitor fasting + post meal sugars more frequently when starting. For joint/vata support (mild knee arthritis) -Maharasnadi kashaya= 15ml + 45 ml warm water twice daily before meals for 8 weeks =supports vata related joint stiffness discomfort -Murivenna external warm application over knees with gentle massage - supports local comfort and mobility For hypothyroidism (important) Gudmar is not a primary herb for hypothyroidism and it does not replace thyroid medication. Continue thyroid medicines as prescribed. Because your energy is poor, I’d strongly consider reviewing whether thyroid levels are optimised Investiations i’d strongly recommend now -HbA1c very important -post prandial glucose (PP) -TSH,free T4 because low energy matters -lipid profile -serum uric acid -vitamin b12 and vitamin D Diet focus on kapha reducing, metabolism supportive eating -Favor= cooked vegetables, leafy greens, lentils (if tolerated), whole grains in moderation, cinnamon in food, fenugreek in diet -Reduce= refined flour, sweets, fruit juices, frequent snacking, heavy dinner -be cautious with excess high sugar fruits even if healthy For uric acid tendency -moderate very high purine foods depending on your history Home remedies -fenugreek seeds soaked overnight small amount may support metabolism -cinnamon in food not excessive supplements -warm water through the day can support digestion/ lightness Yoga and pranayam helpful for both glucose handling and energy -walking very important -gentle knee friendly yoga= supported chair squats, gentle hamstring and calf stretches -Pranayam= anulom vilom, bhramari -stress reduction matters- cortisol can push fasting sugars up Lifestyle -recheck whether recent rise in fasting sugar is temporary (poor sleep, stress, late dinnerrs, illness can raise fasting readings) -monitor sugars more than rarely right now while assessing gudmar -aim for consistent meal timing and regular movement after meals even 10-15 min walk Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you

Gudmar is known for its glucose-lowering effect and may help in improving blood sugar control, especially in pre-diabetes. In your case: HbA1c ~6.2–6.3 (pre-diabetic range) Fasting sugar recently increased (134 mg/dL) Comorbidities: hypothyroidism, hyperuricemia, high LDL, knee arthritis Suggested dosage Powder (leaf): 1–2 grams twice daily, before meals Start with low dose (1 g once daily) and monitor fasting/PP sugar Along with Nishamlki kwath tab - 2 tab twice a day before meal for 3 month

Yes, Gudmar is an excellent choice of drug when addressing multiple metabolic disorders. But it will be better to take equal quantities of gudmar choorna and triphala choorna, and half a quantity of trikatu choorna, with buttermilk, with a 1-hour gap between your other medications. One thing to be cautious about is checking your sugar and BP daily to ensure it doesn’t fluctuate too much. And for increased blood sugar, make sure you are eating a protein-rich diet at night. you can 1st mix the 3 types of choornas in the ratio mentioned and use 3 gm choorna mixed with 1 glass buttermilk and taken preferably before food.

Hello, Since you are managing a complex profile of pre-diabetes, hypothyroidism, and arthritis, it is vital to approach Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre) with caution. While it is a powerhouse in Ayurveda for metabolic health, it is not a “one-size-fits-all” supplement for your specific combination of conditions. In Ayurveda, Gudmar is known as Madhunashini (destroyer of sugar). It works by balancing Kapha and Pitta and scraping away excess Medas (fat/sugar) from the channels. For Pre-diabetes: It is highly effective. It blocks sugar receptors on the tongue and in the gut, helping to lower blood glucose. For Hypothyroid/Arthritis: Gudmar is not a primary treatment for these. In fact, because it is “Ruksha” (dry) and “Vata-increasing” in nature, excessive use can sometimes aggravate joint dryness in Vata-type arthritis. The 134 mg/dL Fasting Sugar: This rise suggests your body is struggling with glucose regulation. Gudmar can help, but it must be monitored so it doesn’t cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Dosage for Raw Gudmar Leaves Since you have raw, dried, and crushed leaves: Dose: Take 2 to 3 grams (approximately 1/2 teaspoon) of the powder. Method: Mix with warm water and consume 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. Caution: Monitor your sugar levels weekly. If you feel dizzy or shaky, reduce the dose immediately. For your specific combination of high uric acid, pre-diabetes, and joint pain, these traditional formulations are highly regarded: 1. For Pre-diabetes & Metabolism: Glymin Tablet This is a specialized proprietary formula. Dose: 2 tablets twice daily, 30 minutes before food. 2. For Uric Acid & Joint Inflammation: Kaisore Guggulu The gold standard for “Vata-Rakta” (high uric acid) and joint health. It helps detoxify the blood. Dose: 2 tablets twice daily after food with warm water. 3. For Overall Metabolic Support (Hypothyroid context): Varanadi Kashayam Helps in clearing blockages (Srotas) and managing weight/cholesterol (LDL). Dose: 15 ml mixed with 45 ml of lukewarm water, taken on an empty stomach in the morning and evening.
