When people mention “Kayan Ayurveda,” they are almost always referring to Kayam
Churna or Kayam Tablets—a very popular, over-the-counter Ayurvedic proprietary formulation used primarily for constipation, gas, and acidity.
••Gut Motility and Drug Absorption
The primary ingredient in Kayam (accounting for about 50% of the formulation) is Senna leaves (Cassia angustifolia), alongside Nishoth (Operculina turpethum). In Ayurveda, these are potent Rechana herbs (strong stimulant laxatives).
••How it affects your medication: Stimulant laxatives speed up peristalsis—the movement of your intestines—to clear out waste.
••The Risk: If your gut is moving too fast, your body may flush out your antidepressant tablet before it has been fully broken down and absorbed into your bloodstream. This can inadvertently lower the effective dose of your psychiatric medication, causing fluctuations in your mood or anxiety levels.
2. Electrolyte Imbalances (Potassium)
Prolonged or heavy use of stimulant laxatives like Senna can lead to diarrhea, dehydration, and a depletion of essential electrolytes, particularly potassium.

Relying on it long-term can make your colon dependent on it, weaken your natural Agni (digestive fire), and chronically aggravate Vata dosha, which naturally governs the nervous system and can indirectly impact your mental peace.
Safe Guidelines for You Moving Forward
If you are experiencing occasional constipation and wish to use Kayam safely alongside your antidepressants, follow these rules:
••Maintain a 2 to 3-Hour Gap: Never take Kayam at the exact same time as your antidepressant. If you take your psychiatric medication in the morning or evening, ensure Kayam is taken strictly at bedtime with lukewarm water, leaving a wide window for drug absorption.
••Keep Use Occasional: Do not use Kayam for more than 2–3 days consecutively.
••Gentler Ayurvedic Alternatives: If you need daily or long-term bowel regulation, swap Kayam for Triphala Churna or Haritaki with warm water or milk at bedtime. Triphala is a Anulomana (gentle regulator) rather than a harsh purgative, making it much safer for your gut lining and less likely to interfere with medication absorption.
