Noise and congestion in the ear - #185

Meera

Hello! A month ago, a stapedoplasty operation was performed. On the second day after the operation, blood began to flow from the ear that was operated on and congestion appeared, and on both sides and dizziness. On examination, they said the blood had flowed behind the eardrum. Tell me, can the blood dissolve or should it be opened and cleaned? And why is there congestion and hearing impairment on the other hand, where they did not operate. Age: 53

Doctors’ responses

After your stapedoplasty, it's common to experience complications such as blood accumulation behind the eardrum, congestion, dizziness, and hearing impairment. Schedule a follow-up appointment to assess whether the blood needs to be drained or if it can dissolve naturally. If the blood isn't causing significant pain or pressure, it may resolve on its own, but stay vigilant for worsening symptoms. Refrain from blowing your nose or making sudden pressure changes. An audiometry test may be beneficial to evaluate your hearing loss.

After your stapedoplasty, experiencing symptoms such as bleeding, congestion, and dizziness can be concerning. The blood behind the eardrum, or hematoma, may sometimes resolve on its own; however, if significant, it might need to be drained to alleviate pressure and prevent further issues. The congestion and hearing impairment on the non-operated side could be attributed to Eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid accumulation in the middle ear, or a vestibular system response to the surgery. In Ayurveda, you can consider using Triphala, a herbal formulation known for its detoxifying properties, which may support overall ear health. Nasya therapy, where medicated oils like Anu Taila or Brahmi oil are applied to the nasal passages, may help alleviate congestion and promote clarity in the head region. Additionally, consuming warm herbal teas made from ginger and Tulsi (holy basil) can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting circulation. It’s crucial to follow up with your ENT specialist for a thorough evaluation, as they can assess whether drainage is necessary and recommend treatments such as decongestants to help with your symptoms. Regular check-ups are vital to monitor your recovery and manage any complications effectively.

Hey there, I hope you're doing alright! Given the situation you described, it's important to be cautious, espcially with post-op issues like this. After a stapedoplasty, having blood behind the eardrum isn't too unusual, but it can definitely cause what you're experiencing: congestion, dizziness, and hearing changes. Firstly, about whether the blood can dissolve on its own—usually, yes, the body can reabsorb the blood with time. But, in some cases, it may need some help. It's crucial to follow up with your ENT specialist. They'll know whether it requires intervention, like draining, based on the extent of the blood buildup and if it's impacting your hearing or balance significantly. As for the congestion and hearing changes on the opposite side, well, the human body can be a little quirky sometimes! Sometimes we see compensatory issues, like congestion, because of changes in pressure or fluid balance after an ear surgery. It's a good idea to have the other ear checked too, maybe theres some fluid buildup or they might suggest something like a steam inhalation to help with Eustachian tube function. From an Ayurvedic angle, focus on maintaining vata balance, since ear issues often relate to vata disturbances. Try applying warm sesame oil gently to the outer ear (not inside!), and do some gentle neck stretches to help with ear drainage. Watch your diet too – avoid cold or stale foods, and favor warm, light meals with ginger or turmeric. Stay hydrated and get loads of rest! If symptoms worsen or you’re really worried, definitely get back to your doctor right away. Safety first!
