Pain in the lower back combined with occasional swelling in the hand and fingers can indeed be quite frustrating. From an Ayurvedic perspective, we’re looking at potential imbalances in the body’s doshas, especially Vata dosha, which often governs pain in the lower back. It could also be related to Kapha dosha, as swelling is a common symptom when Kapha is out of balance.

Firstly, ensure to assess your daily routine. Ayurveda places significant emphasis on dinacharya, or daily regimens. Try to maintain a regular schedule for sleeping, waking, and meals to keep your doshas balanced. In terms of diet, consuming warm, simple, and easily digestible foods can help pacify Vata and Kapha dosha. Drink warm ginger tea or turmeric milk in the evening to reduce inflammation and calm your mind.

Include regular self-massage in your routine, using warm sesame oil on your back and hands to increase circulation and relieve pain. Always follow this with a warm shower. Gentle exercises like Yoga, especially poses like Cat-Cow or Child’s Pose, can support the lower back. But, ensure you’re not over-straining during these exercises.

For the swelling, soak your hands in warm water with a teaspoon of Epsom salts for about 10-15 minutes as it may help in reducing inflammation. Also, try elevating your hands a bit when you sit to decrease fluid retention.

If symptoms persist with these approaches or if they worsen, it would be sensible to consult a healthcare practitioner. Sometimes, an underlying condition, like carpal tunnel or an orthopedic issue, could be the cause. Immediate medical evaluation is necessary if you experience severe pain, numbness, or signs of a severe condition. Always prioritize your well-being and seek a balance of Ayurvedic practices and conventional medicine when needed.
