what is the best diet for a diabetic person - #44393

I am dealing with some really frustrating stuff right now. My dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes, and it's been a whirlwind trying to figure out how to help him with his diet. He loves food, especially his morning pancakes and snacks after dinner, but now I’m kinda lost on what changes need to be made. Like, I keep seeing articles about what is the best diet for a diabetic person but they all say something different! Some say low-carb works wonders, while others are talking about Mediterranean diets or whatever. He’s not a fan of greens, which makes it even tougher. I’m starting to think, am I just gonna have to turn his whole life upside down? Ugh, can’t believe I’m saying this but he might actually be better off with his regular meals rather than trying to fit something that sounds impressive but he won't eat!! He’s had a few spikes recently, and I’m worried they could lead to something worse. He doesn’t take the medications that well either – there’s so much to juggle. It’s super confusing, honestly. Should we be focusing on carbs, or is portion control more important? Like what is the best diet for a diabetic person that also won’t send him into a culinary depression?! Any thoughts would be super appreciated!!

Managing a diet for someone with diabetes while keeping their culinary happiness intact can certainly be a challenge - without turning everything upside down. According to Ayurveda, the aim would be to balance the doshas, particularly disparities influenced by faulty metabolism and digestion, often a factor in diabetes.

First, on the bhava of carbs. Generally, a moderate carb intake is advisable; you don’t need to eliminate them completely. Choose complex carbohydrates like whole grains, millet, or quinoa, which release glucose slowly and help to mitigate spikes. These can replace refined carbs such as white bread or instant rice. Also, cooking fresh, warm meals is vital to maintain the agni. Including spices like turmeric, ginger and fenugreek to enhance digestion.

Incorporating bitter and astringent tastes can be helpful; bitter gourds or methi (fenugreek leaves), if palatable, are known to support sugar control. Increasing fiber intake could help too, with options such as oats and barley.

Regarding portions, balance is key. Encourage several smaller meals rather than a few large ones. This helps in stabilizing sugar levels. Ideally, meals should be sattvic, prepared with fresh ingredients, consumed calmly, without stress.

Establish a routine around meal times to sync with the body’s natural cycles; avoid eating late at night as it can disturb digestion and sleep.

For pancakes or snacks, consider healthier variations. Nut-based flours or besan (gram flour) can be used instead of refined white flour. Sweets can be replaced with dried fruits or raw honey in moderation. Important note—ensure he consults with his healthcare provider regarding medication and any major dietary shifts.

Simultaneously you might want to contemplate on an active lifestyle, encouraging gentle exercise like walking or yoga, as it accents the diet’s effects. It’s all about finding a harmony; small adjustments go a long way without totally overhauling favorites.
