Facial darkening can happen due to multiple internal reasons and the pattern of the skin gives important clues if the darkness is thick slightly rough and velvety especially around neck underarms and sometimes along the jawline then it is more suggestive of Acanthosis nigricans which is commonly linked with insulin resistance even when sugar reports are not very high if the skin looks generally dull dry and slightly darker along with symptoms like tiredness hair fall weight fluctuation or puffiness then thyroid imbalance can be a contributing factor if the pigmentation is more patchy involving face hands or knuckles along with fatigue weakness or tingling sensation then Vitamin B12 deficiency can be responsible if the color is more grey brown or slate like over cheeks and temples without thickness then it may be Lichen planus pigmentosus which is more of a pigmentary condition rather than metabolic To understand the exact cause basic tests like fasting insulin fasting glucose HbA1c thyroid profile and vitamin B12 levels will give clarity because treatment differs based on root cause For internal correction Avipattikar Churna half teaspoon with warm water at bedtime helps improve digestion and metabolism Manjishtadi Kashayam fifteen ml with equal water twice daily after food supports skin detoxification and improves pigmentation Haridra Khanda half teaspoon twice daily after food helps in reducing inflammation and improving skin tone Khadirarishtam fifteen ml with equal water after lunch and dinner supports blood purification and chronic skin conditions Arogyavardhini Vati one tablet twice daily after food helps in correcting metabolism and liver function which is important in pigmentation Externally Nalpamaradi Keram can be applied on face once daily before bath and left for twenty minutes then washed off gently this helps in improving complexion and reducing uneven pigmentation Diet should avoid excess sugar bakery items fried foods and processed food include fresh fruits leafy vegetables soaked almonds and good hydration maintaining regular sleep and reducing stress is also important because hormonal imbalance and skin pigmentation are closely linked internally

Facial skin darkening can be linked to several internal factors: thyroid disorders, insulin resistance (often showing as acanthosis nigricans), and vitamin B12 deficiency—all of which can cause pigmentation changes. Differentiating between acanthosis nigricans (AN) and lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) requires clinical examination and sometimes biopsy, as they have distinct patterns. Rx 1.Kaishore vatkam 2 tab twice daily with water after meals 2.Mahamanjisthadi kwath 20 ml with 20 ml water twice daily after meals 3.Kumkumadi taila - massage on the pigrmented areas at bedtime and leave it overnight

Namaste, Facial darkening can have multiple causes, especially when there is a history of thyroid issues or weight changes. Simple understanding: Acanthosis nigricans is usually linked to insulin resistance and appears as darker, thickened skin (often neck, folds). LPP (Lichen Planus Pigmentosus) appears as patchy dark pigmentation, often on face and sun-exposed areas. Thyroid imbalance and Vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute to skin dullness or pigmentation. Since causes can overlap, it is important to confirm with proper evaluation (blood tests/dermatology opinion). Simple measures that may help: Maintain a balanced diet with good nutrition, especially iron, B12, and proteins. Manage thyroid properly with regular medication and follow-up. Reduce sugar and processed foods, especially if insulin resistance is suspected. Use sun protection, as sunlight can worsen pigmentation. Keep digestion and metabolism balanced with regular meals and good sleep. Ayurvedic medicines sometimes used to support skin health include: Manjistha – traditionally used to support blood purification and skin health. Amla (Amalaki) – commonly used to support skin glow and metabolism. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.

If it is LPP, it appears as patchy dark pigmentation, more on sun-exposed areas. Thyroid imbalance and Vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute to dullness and uneven skin tone. To confirm the exact cause, it is better to do basic blood tests (thyroid, sugar, B12) and take a dermatology opinion. You should first get proper tests done before assuming the cause of your facial darkening. Since you already have thyroid issues and weight changes, insulin resistance or acanthosis nigricans is quite possible, but thyroid imbalance or vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute. You need to check TSH, T3, T4, fasting sugar, fasting insulin or HbA1c, and Vitamin B12 levels. A dermatologist examination is also important to rule out lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) because treatment is different. If the pigmentation is velvety, thicker, and also present on the neck or underarms, it is more suggestive of acanthosis nigricans related to metabolic issues. If the face just looks generally dull or darker with dry skin and fatigue, thyroid may be contributing. Patchy grey-brown pigmentation mainly on cheeks or temples may point more towards LPP. You should not self-treat until the cause is clear. Focus on weight management, proper thyroid control, balanced diet, good sleep, and regular activity, as these help in most metabolic-related pigmentation issues.
