Namaste, Facial darkening can have multiple causes, especially when there is a history of thyroid issues or weight changes. Simple understanding: Acanthosis nigricans is usually linked to insulin resistance and appears as darker, thickened skin (often neck, folds). LPP (Lichen Planus Pigmentosus) appears as patchy dark pigmentation, often on face and sun-exposed areas. Thyroid imbalance and Vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute to skin dullness or pigmentation. Since causes can overlap, it is important to confirm with proper evaluation (blood tests/dermatology opinion). Simple measures that may help: Maintain a balanced diet with good nutrition, especially iron, B12, and proteins. Manage thyroid properly with regular medication and follow-up. Reduce sugar and processed foods, especially if insulin resistance is suspected. Use sun protection, as sunlight can worsen pigmentation. Keep digestion and metabolism balanced with regular meals and good sleep. Ayurvedic medicines sometimes used to support skin health include: Manjistha – traditionally used to support blood purification and skin health. Amla (Amalaki) – commonly used to support skin glow and metabolism. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.

Namaste, Facial darkening can happen due to multiple reasons, especially when there is a history of thyroid imbalance and weight changes. Simple understanding: If it is acanthosis nigricans, it is usually linked to insulin resistance and appears as darker, slightly thickened skin (commonly neck, folds, sometimes face). If it is LPP, it appears as patchy dark pigmentation, more on sun-exposed areas. Thyroid imbalance and Vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute to dullness and uneven skin tone. To confirm the exact cause, it is better to do basic blood tests (thyroid, sugar, B12) and take a dermatology opinion. Simple measures that may help: Maintain a balanced diet with good nutrition, especially B12, iron, and protein. Reduce sugar and processed foods if insulin resistance is suspected. Continue proper thyroid medication and follow-up. Use sun protection daily, as sunlight can worsen pigmentation. Support digestion with regular meals and good sleep. Ayurvedic medicines sometimes used to support skin health include: Manjistha – traditionally used to support skin health and detox balance. Amla (Amalaki) – commonly used to support metabolism and improve skin quality. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.

You should first get proper tests done before assuming the cause of your facial darkening. Since you already have thyroid issues and weight changes, insulin resistance or acanthosis nigricans is quite possible, but thyroid imbalance or vitamin B12 deficiency can also contribute. You need to check TSH, T3, T4, fasting sugar, fasting insulin or HbA1c, and Vitamin B12 levels. A dermatologist examination is also important to rule out lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) because treatment is different. If the pigmentation is velvety, thicker, and also present on the neck or underarms, it is more suggestive of acanthosis nigricans related to metabolic issues. If the face just looks generally dull or darker with dry skin and fatigue, thyroid may be contributing. Patchy grey-brown pigmentation mainly on cheeks or temples may point more towards LPP. You should not self-treat until the cause is clear. Focus on weight management, proper thyroid control, balanced diet, good sleep, and regular activity, as these help in most metabolic-related pigmentation issues.
