What precautions should I take after kidney stones and back pain recovery? - #54318

Sir, I developed kidney stones one year ago. The condition recurred in November. The stones were cleared through Ayurvedic medication. While the stones were present, I experienced severe back pain; however, since the stones have cleared, the back pain has become mild. When I consulted a doctor, I was informed that the stones cause internal injuries, and that the pain would persist until those injuries fully heal. I request that you kindly provide appropriate precautions and suggestions regarding my condition. Thank you.

Once the body has a tendency to produce kidney stones it keeps on making… It becomes a habit of the body. Follow some simple lifestyle changes and dietary changes and you will see results for your problem. ✔️Do’s✔️ Drink buttermilk daily. Eat freshly cooked food. Eat Barnyard millet (Bhagar/Varai) with ghee daily. It will help you crush your stone naturally. Drink warm water. Lunch and dinner on fixed timings. 100 steps after every meal. If possible dinner as early as 7-8 pm. ❌Don’ts:❌ Packed and processed food. Ready to eat items. Oily and spicy food. Sour and fermented products. Dals (only moong dal can be eaten) Besan Raw vegetables and sprouts Curd 💊 Medication 💊 Cap. Stonvil(S.G.Phytopharma) 2 caps twice a day before food. Syp. Varunadi Kwath 3 tsp twice a day before food. Take this medicine for one month in every six months so that the stones donot become big enough to cause pain Castor oil. 3 tsp at bed time with hot water.

Your condition is quite common—after Kidney Stones, mild back pain can persist due to irritation and healing of urinary tract tissues. In Ayurveda, this is related to imbalance of Vata dosha and residual inflammation. 1. Maintain Proper Hydration Drink 2.5–3 liters of warm water daily Add barley water or coconut water to flush remaining toxins (mutra shuddhi) 2. Diet Avoid excess salt, sour, spicy, and fried foods Reduce spinach, tomato seeds, and high-oxalate foods Prefer light, alkaline diet: lauki, tori, cucumber, coconut water 3. Rx A) tab Cystone forte - 1 tab twice a day after meal B) tab Gokshuradi gugglu - 2 tab twice a day after meal C) varunadi kwath - 15 ml twice a day after meal 4. Control Vata for Back Pain Do gentle oil massage (Abhyanga) with warm sesame oil on lower back Avoid heavy lifting, sudden jerks, prolonged sitting 5. Regular Mild Exercise Walking, stretching, and yoga (like Bhujangasana, Pawanmuktasana) Improves circulation and reduces stiffness 6. Avoid Stone Recurrence Do not hold urine Maintain regular eating habits Avoid dehydration and excessive tea/coffee

Hello, It is common to experience lingering discomfort after passing kidney stones. In Ayurveda, this condition is often related to Vata Dosha imbalance. When a stone (Vrushana) moves through the urinary tract, its rough edges cause “Srotas-kshobha” (irritation of the channels) and “Abhighata” (internal trauma). Even after the stone is gone, the “Vata” (the principle of movement and pain) remains aggravated in the kidneys and lower back, and the delicate mucosal lining needs time to regenerate. 1. Internal Healing (Diet & Herbs) To heal internal injuries and soothe the urinary tract, you need substances that are Snigdha (unctuous/oily) and Ropana (healing). Gokshuradi Guggulu: This is a classic Ayurvedic formulation that acts as a natural diuretic and anti-inflammatory. It helps heal the internal lining of the kidneys and bladder. Punarnava: Known as a “renovator” of the kidneys, it helps reduce any lingering swelling or inflammation in the renal tissues. Coconut Water & Barley Water: These are Sheetala (cooling) and help flush out micro-crystals that might still be irritating the “wounds” left by the stones. Amla (Indian Gooseberry): High in Vitamin C and antioxidants, it aids in tissue repair and strengthens the urinary system. 2. Managing the Back Pain (External Care) Since your pain is now mild, the focus is on calming the nerves and muscles in the lumbar region. Kati Basti: This is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment where a pool of warm medicated oil (like Dhanwantharam Thailam or Mahanarayan Oil) is kept on the lower back. It deeply nourishes the tissues and accelerates the healing of internal “bruising.” Local Abhyanga: Gently massage your lower back with warm sesame oil before your bath. This pacifies Vata and improves blood circulation to the injured area. Hot Fomentation: Use a heating pad or a warm water bag on the lower back to relax the muscles that may have gone into spasm during the acute stone episode. 3. Crucial Precautions To ensure the injuries heal and stones do not return, follow these guidelines: Avoid “Ruksha” (Dry) Foods: Stay away from very dry, spicy, or astringent foods (like crackers, excessive caffeine, or heavy legumes) which can increase Vata and lead to more pain. Hydration Strategy: Don’t just drink water; drink “Ushnodaka” (water boiled and then cooled to room temperature). It is easier for the kidneys to process and helps in clearing toxins (Ama). Don’t Suppress Urges: Never hold back the urge to urinate. In Ayurveda, suppressing “Vegashakti” (natural urges) is a primary cause of stone formation and localized pain. Posture: Since your back is sensitive, avoid sitting in one position for long hours. Use a lumbar support to ensure the healing tissues aren’t under constant strain.

🩺 Ayurvedic View: This condition occurs after Mutrashmari (kidney stones), where residual Vata aggravation and local irritation can lead to mild persistent back pain. 🌿 Approach: Focus on urinary tract healing + recurrence prevention + Vata balance. Gokshuradi Guggulu – 1 tablet twice daily after food Punarnavadi Kashayam – 10 ml with equal water, twice daily before food Chandraprabha Vati – 1 tablet twice daily after food 🛢️ Local care: Apply Murivenna taila over lower back once daily for healing and pain relief. 🥗 Diet & Precautions: ✔️ Drink 2.5–3 liters water daily (spread throughout the day) ✔️ Include coconut water, barley water (yava), and light foods like moong dal ✔️ Add kulthi (horse gram) in moderation for stone prevention ❌ Avoid excess salt, packaged foods, dehydration ❌ Limit high oxalate foods (spinach, beetroot, tomato seeds). ❌Not to hold urine any time. ⏳ Note: Mild pain after stone clearance is common and gradually improves with proper care. — Dr. Shubhi Goel | Ayurvedic Consultant

Your situation is quite common after recovery from kidney stones, so don’t worry—but a small correction first: the pain you’re feeling now is usually not from “internal wounds” alone. It is more often due to: Residual inflammation in the urinary tract Muscle spasm and stiffness from earlier severe pain Mild Vata imbalance especially since pain is sharp and worse with posture. We will plan your prescription according to post stone recovery. 👉Yograj gugglu 2 tablets twice daily after meal. 👉Chandraprabha Vati 2 tablets twice daily. 👉Varunadi Kwath 10 ml twice daily. 👉External application Mahanarayan Taila massage on lower back daily Follow with hot water bag / warm fomentation. 👉Lifestyle precautions (most important) Since your pain increases with activity/posture: Avoid sitting continuously > 40–45 minutes Maintain straight posture with back support Avoid sudden bending or lifting heavy weights Continue light exercise, but avoid overexertion 👉Diet guidelines (to prevent stones again) ✅ Include: 2.5–3 liters water daily Coconut water (regularly) Barley water Fruits like pomegranate ❌ Avoid excess: Spinach, beetroot, tomato (oxalate-rich) Very salty, fried, spicy food Packaged/processed foods 🧘Exercise & yoga Since you’re already active, continue—but add: Bhujangasana (cobra pose) Cat–cow stretch Light back strengthening exercises Avoid high-impact workouts temporarily if pain triggers. Follow up after 15 days. Dr. Muskan Chopra Ayurvedacharyaa

HELLO, In Ayurveda, kidney stones are known as “Ashmari”- this word means “formed like a stone” in the urinary system. Why stone forms? -agnidushti (poor digestion and metabolism) -Ama(toxins) accumulation -Kapha vata imbalance -excess of minerals like calcium, uric acid or oxalates in urine -Drinking less water -suppressing urine urges -excess consumption of salty, sour, spicy, fried foods These imbalances cause the crystallisation of minerals and block the urine channels(Mutravaha srotas), leading to stone formation Treatment goals -break down and dissolve the stones(litholytic action) -flush out small stones through urine -prevent formation of new stones (anti-recurrence) -correct digestion and metabolism (balance agni) -detoxify urinary channels(srotosodhana) INTERNAL MEDICATIONS 1) Varunadi kashaya= 20 ml + equal water twice daily before meals =breaks down stones, clears urinary obstruction 2) Pashanbhedadi vati= 2 tabs twice daily after meals =strong stone dissolving pain reducing medication 3)Gokshuradi guggulu= 2 tabs twice daily after meals =diuretic, anti-inflammatory, supports kidney 4) Chandraprabha vati= 2 tabs twice daily after meals =strengthen urinary tract, prevents infections 5) Punarnava mandur = 1 tab twice daily after meals =improves kidney function, removes swelling 6) Cystone tab (himalaya )= 1 tab twice daily after meals =helps in prevention and flushing out stones Duration = usually 2-3 months continuously Diet and lifestyle changes Diet plays a crucial role in preventing new stones and supporting kidney health Have more -warm, light foods= khichdi, moong dal, barley, daliya -Plenty of fluids= aim for 2.5-3 L /day -Coconut water=naturally diuretic -Lemon water without sugar= prevents stone formation -Barley water -clears urinary tract -Vegetables= bootle gourd, ash gourd, cucumber, ridge gourd -Fruits= watermelon, papaya, amla -Spices= cumin, coriander, fennel, turmeric Avoid -Tomato with seeds, spinach, beetroot= high in oxalates -Milk and milk heavy products= avoid excess panner, cheese -Oily, fried, spicy foods= increases toxins -soft drinks, coffee, tea, alcohol -non veg food- especially red meat -holding urine- avoid delaying urination Regular yoga improves kidney circulation and helps detoxification -Vajrasana= after meals -Pawanmuktasana= relieves abdominal pressure -Bhujangasana -Dhanurasana -Ardha Matsyendrasana-gentle twist for kidneys Pranayam -Anulom Vilom= balance vata and pitta -Sheetali= cools body, prevent stone formation -Bhramari= calming and anti inflammatory Avoid excessive physical strain Home remedies 1) Jeera coriander fennel tea -boil 1 tsp each in 2 cups of water, reduce to 1 cup. sip warm, twice daily =helps digestion and acts as mild diuretic 2) BARLEY WATER -soak 2 tbsp barley in water overnight, boil, next day and drink throughout the day =helps flush urinary tract 3) LEMON JUICE WITH WARM WATER -fresh lemon juice in warm water every morning helps prevent stone formation - high in citrate content 4) BANANA STEM JUICE -100 ml daily-excellent natural lithotropic 5)COCONUT WATER -natural alkaliser and diuretic- prevents crystal formation REPEAT ULTRASOUND= every 3 months -Ayurveda is highly effective In stone dissolution, recurrence prevention, and improving kidney strength, when followed properly and consistently Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you
