Is there a more cost effective way to treat arthritis in a horse than giving it glucosamine that cost $50 a month when I’m sure there is at least one herb of some kind that can do just as good. Many people add stuff they don’t need to charge more. Animals can use the same herbs as humans. The only difference is the fillers which is why they say don’t use people supplements for animals. So think of this question as me talking about a human only double or triple the strength from a 120lb person to 1200 lbs. Thank you

​In Ayurveda, arthritis in a 20-year-old horse is viewed as Sandhigata Vata (Vata localized in the joints). As horses age, the Vata Dosha naturally increases, leading to the depletion of Shleshaka Kapha (the synovial fluid that lubricates joints) and the degeneration of Asthi Dhatu (bone/cartilage tissue). This causes the dryness, stiffness, and pain you are seeing in the hind limb.
​Cost-Effective Herbal Alternative :
​The most effective and budget-friendly herb that mimics the anti-inflammatory and cartilage-supporting effects of Glucosamine is Shallaki (Boswellia serrata). It is widely used in equine care to reduce joint swelling and improve mobility without the high cost of synthetic supplements.
Prescription :
​1. Internal Medicine: Balarishtam
​Purpose: A powerful Vata-balancing tonic that strengthens muscles, ligaments, and joints.
​Dose: 60 ml mixed with 60 ml of lukewarm water, twice daily after feed.
​2. External Application: Dhanwantharam Thailam
​Purpose: To nourish the joint and reduce stiffness in the back foot.
​Dose: Apply 30–50 ml of warm oil to the affected joint daily; massage gently in a clockwise motion and leave for at least 30 minutes before washing or grooming.
​3. Single Herb Supplement: Shallaki (Boswellia) Powder
​Dose: 10–15 grams of pure Shallaki powder mixed with the horse’s grain once daily.
