Doctors' responses
For chronic gas, bloating, indigestion, and constipation of 20 years, an Ayurvedic approach is to improve Agni (digestive fire) and regulate Apana Vata. Take • Avipattikar Churna 5 g at bedtime with warm water daily. • Hingvashtak Churna 2 g with the first morsel of lunch and dinner. • Triphala Churna 5 g at bedtime if constipation persists. • Abhayarishta 20 ml + equal water after dinner. Diet: Drink 2–3 glasses of warm water on waking. • Eat meals at fixed times. Avoid cold drinks, bakery foods, excess tea, curd at night, and heavy dinner. • Include cooked vegetables, soaked black raisins, and a little cow ghee in food.
According to Ayurveda, long-standing gas, bloating, indigestion, and constipation are commonly associated with Mandagni (weak digestive fire) and Vata Dosha imbalance, especially in the colon (Pakwashaya). When digestion remains weak for many years, toxins (Ama) accumulate and disturb normal bowel movements, causing discomfort, heaviness, and excessive gas formation. What You Can Do 1. Improve Digestive Fire (Agni) Drink a glass of warm water immediately after waking up. Sip warm water throughout the day instead of cold water. Before meals, chew a small piece of fresh ginger with a pinch of rock salt if suitable for you. Eat freshly cooked, warm, and easily digestible food. 2. Correct Constipation Naturally Take 1–2 teaspoons of Triphala powder with warm water at bedtime regularly. Include soaked black raisins, figs, or prunes in your daily diet. Use 1 teaspoon of cow’s ghee in warm milk at night if digestion permits. Never suppress the natural urge for bowel movements. 3. Reduce Gas and Bloating Avoid excessive tea, coffee, cold drinks, bakery items, fried foods, and packaged snacks. Reduce foods that worsen gas such as excess potatoes, chickpeas, rajma, and cabbage if they trigger symptoms. Eat meals at fixed timings and avoid overeating. Walk for 15–20 minutes after meals. 4. Daily Lifestyle Support Wake up early and establish a regular toilet routine, even if the urge is not immediate. Practice gentle yoga such as Pawanmuktasana, Vajrasana after meals, and deep breathing exercises. Manage stress, as anxiety and mental strain can aggravate Vata and worsen digestion.
