Thank you for sharing your details. In Ayurveda, persistent foot numbness and tingling after lumbar spinal fusion surgery may be associated with Vata Dosha aggravation, especially when nerves, muscles, and spinal structures have been affected. Since your numbness started immediately after surgery and has continued for one year, it suggests ongoing nerve irritation or delayed nerve recovery. Ayurvedic Approach for Foot Numbness After Lumbar Surgery 1. Internal Ayurvedic Medicines A)Yograj Guggulu – Supports nerve, muscle, and joint health. B) Mahayograj Guggulu – Helpful in chronic Vata disorders affecting nerves. C)Ashwagandha Churna/Capsules – Nourishes nerves, improves strength, and supports recovery. D)Brihat Vata Chintamani Ras– Traditionally used for chronic neurological weakness and numbness. E) Ksheerabala 101 Capsules – Supports nerve regeneration and reduces tingling sensations. 2. External Therapies These therapies often provide significant support in chronic post-surgical nerve issues: A) Daily Abhyanga (Oil Massage) with warm Mahanarayan Taila or Ksheerabala Taila over the lower back, legs, and feet. B) Nadi Swedana (Medicated Steam Therapy) after oil application to improve circulation and reduce stiffness. C) Kati Basti – Retaining warm medicated oil over the lumbar region to nourish the spine and surrounding tissues. D) Matra Basti (Medicated Oil Enema) – One of Ayurveda’s most effective therapies for Vata disorders affecting nerves and the lower limbs. 3. Diet Recommendations Prefer warm, freshly cooked, easily digestible foods: * Warm milk with Ashwagandha at bedtime (if suitable). *Ghee in moderation to nourish nerves. *Soups, khichdi, cooked vegetables, soaked almonds, black raisins. *Adequate hydration. Avoid: *Excessively cold foods and drinks. *Dry, packaged, processed foods. * Excess fasting. * Excess tea, coffee, and alcohol. 4. Lifestyle & Rehabilitation * Continue your physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises as advised by your spine specialist. *Gentle stretching, walking, and supervised yoga can improve circulation and nerve function. * Maintain proper posture and avoid prolonged sitting. * Ensure adequate sleep and stress management, as nerve healing is often slow and gradual. Prognosis Nerves heal slowly. Ayurveda aims to support nerve nourishment, improve circulation, reduce Vata imbalance, and enhance overall functional recovery. Many patients experience gradual improvement in tingling, strength, and comfort when Ayurvedic therapies are combined with ongoing rehabilitation.

••From an Ayurvedic perspective, this condition is classified under Vata Vyadhi, specifically manifesting as Padaharsha (numbness/tingling in the feet) or Suptata (loss of sensation). The surgical intervention, structural alteration of the spine, and subsequent tissue scarring create localized Sanga (obstruction) in the Srotas (channels), severely aggravating Vyana Vayu and Apana Vayu. Because the structural landscape has been permanently changed by hardware, the therapeutic goal shifts from a total cure to significant management: pacifying Vata, improving local Rakta Rasa Ayana (blood circulation), and promoting Nadi Balya (nerve rejuvenation). ••Classical Ayurvedic Formulations (Chikitsa) To counter the localized Khavaigunya (tissue weakness) and nourish the peripheral nerves, a combination of Vata-hara and Balya (tonic) medicines is traditionally utilized. ••Ekangveer Ras: A potent herbo-mineral formulation containing processed mercury, sulfur, and incinerated metals (Bhasmas) alongside Vata-pacifying herbs. It directly targets the nervous system (Nadi Samsthana) to stimulate microcirculation and restore Sparsha Gyana (tactile sensation). ••Trayodashang Guggulu: Formulated specifically for spine, nerve, and musculoskeletal pathologies. The Guggulu base acts as a carrier (Yogavahi) to penetrate deep into structural tissues, reducing localized inflammatory scar tissue that may be compressing the nerve root. ••Ksheerabala 101 Avartani: A specialized preparation where Ksheerabala Thailam undergoes repeated fortification (101 times). Administered orally in small drop dosages, it provides profound nourishment to the Majja Dhatu (bone marrow and nervous tissue), counteracting the dryness and degeneration driven by aggravated Vata. ••Dietary & Lifestyle Modulations (Ahara-Vihara) To prevent further metabolic generation of dry, rough, and cold qualities that aggravate Vata: ••Ahara: Prioritize foods that are Snigdha (unctuous/warm) and Guru (nourishing). Include fresh, warm soups, cow’s ghee (Gau Ghrita), and spices like ginger, garlic, and cumin to maintain Agni (digestive fire) without inducing inflammation. Strictly avoid Rooksha (dry, stale, parched) foods and cold salads. ••Vihara: Engage in gentle Vata-Anulomana movements. Avoid strenuous forward bending or lifting. If structural fusion allows, gentle ankle-pumping exercises and light calf stretches can help keep peripheral circulation moving to the feet.

Hello, Sorry to hear about the numbness post surgery. It is always to tough to cure the numbness just with medications as it has started post surgery. There are set of panchakarma procedures called “vasti/basti” which along with internal medications will help to improve. So please meet an experienced ayurveda doctor in your area who has ayurveda hospital with good panchakarma set up. He/she can surely help you out. Take care, Kind regards.

Hello, Since your foot numbness started immediately after lumbar spinal fusion surgery and has persisted for 1 year, it is most likely related to nerve injury, nerve irritation, or incomplete nerve recovery rather than a simple vata imbalance alone. Nerves can continue to recover slowly for 12-24 months after surgery, but persistent severe numbness warrants ongoing follow up with your spine surgeon or neurologist TREATMENT GOALS -improve nerve nourishment and regeneration -reduce numbness, tingling and pins and needles sensation -improve mobility and muscle strength -support circulation and nerve function -prevent further weakness and stiffness Recommended evaluation -MRI/CT -Nerve conduction study/ EMG -Vitamin B12 -Vitamin D -Blood sugar Internal medications 1) Ksheerbala 101 capsules= 1 cap twice daily after meals for 3 months =classically used for nerve weakness, numbness, tingling, and vata disorders 2) Ashwagandha capsules= 500mg twice daily after meals with warm milk for 3 months =supports nerve recovery, muscle strength, energy, and rehabilitations 3) Yogaraj guggulu= 2 tabs twice daily after meals for 3 months =helps with chronic vata disorders, stiffness and mmusculoskeletal recovery 4) Brahmi vati= 1 tab at beditme for 2 months =for sleep and stress management External therapies 1) Ksheerbala taila abhyana -warm oil massage over lower back, buttock, affected leg, and foot -15-20 min daily FOLLOW WITH -mild hot fomentation (warm towel or hot water bag) -avoid excessive heat over surgical scar if sensitive =improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and supports nerve nourishment PHYSIOTHERAPY (Very important) Continue physiotherapy because it remains one of the most effective treatments after spinal fusion FOCUS ON -nerve gliding exercises -ankle mobility exercises -calf strengthening -balance training -walking program as tolerated Ayurvedic medicines work best when combined with rehabilitation Diet -cow’s ghee -milk -almonds and walnuts -moong dal -fresh fruits and vegetables -protein rich foods AVOID -excess fried food -processed foods -smoking and alcohol -long periods of immobility Yoga and pranayam -anulom vilom -bhramari -gentle stretching -walking meditation Avoid forceful forward bending or twisting exercises Home remedies -warm sesame oil foot massage before bed -epsom salt foot soak (if there are no open wounds ) -keep feet protected from injury, burns or cuts because numb feet may not sense trauma properly Because the numbness began immediately after surgery and remains severe after one year, this should be viewed primarily as a post surgical nerve recovery issue. Ayurvedic treatment can support nerve nourishment and reduce symptoms, but ongoing physiotherapy, neurologist assessment, and correction of vitamin B12/ vitamin D deficiencies are equally important. Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you
