Your symptoms suggest that this is not just simple age-related knee pain. The combination of morning stiffness, finger joint swelling, fingers getting stuck while bending/opening, difficulty squatting, and pain lasting for more than 6 months raises the possibility of an inflammatory joint condition such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata in Ayurveda), along with degenerative changes (Sandhivata) in the knees. Therefore, treatment should focus on reducing inflammation, improving joint lubrication, and preventing further joint damage. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this appears to be a combination of Ama accumulation (inflammatory toxins) and aggravated Vata affecting the joints, leading to stiffness, swelling, pain, and reduced mobility. I would advise the following Ayurvedic regimen: 1. Yograj Guggulu – 2 tablets twice daily after meals with warm water for 8–12 weeks. Helps reduce joint pain, stiffness, and improves mobility. 2. Maharasnadi Kwath – 15 ml with equal water twice daily after meals. Useful for chronic joint inflammation and stiffness. 3. Shallaki (Boswellia) capsule – 1 capsule twice daily after meals. Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and supports knee joint function. For external application, gently massage knees and finger joints with Mahanarayan Taila or Kottamchukkadi Taila daily, followed by mild warm fomentation for 10–15 minutes. Regarding the sesame-jaggery remedy: Mix 100 g black sesame seeds + 100 g jaggery. Lightly dry-roast the sesame seeds (do not deep fry), grind coarsely, and mix with jaggery. Take 1–2 teaspoons daily, preferably in the morning. This provides calcium, minerals, and supports bone strength, but it should be considered a supportive remedy rather than the main treatment. Diet-wise, prefer warm, freshly cooked foods, mung dal, vegetable soups, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and adequate protein. Avoid excessive curd at night, cold foods, refrigerated items, deep-fried foods, and excess sugar. If feasible, Panchakarma therapies such as Patra Pinda Sweda, Janu Basti (for knees), and later Basti Chikitsa (medicated enemas) can provide significant relief in chronic Vata-related joint disorders. I would also strongly recommend investigations such as RA Factor, Anti-CCP Antibody, ESR, CRP, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, and X-ray of both knees, as finger swelling and prolonged morning stiffness can indicate inflammatory arthritis that benefits from early diagnosis. With consistent treatment, improvement in stiffness is usually seen within 4–6 weeks, while better mobility and pain relief may take 2–3 months.

••The symptoms you are describing—morning stiffness that takes time to loosen up, swollen finger joints that get “stuck” (triggering), and an inability to bear weight or squat—are classic clinical signs. In Ayurveda, this presentation points strongly toward a Vata imbalance affecting the Asthi (bone) and Sandhi (joints), combined with the accumulation of Ama (toxic metabolic waste). When Ama settles in the joints alongside aggravated Vata, it creates a condition known as Amavata, which correlates closely with inflammatory arthritis. ••The Sesame and Jaggery Remedy The remedy you saw utilizes sesame seeds (Tila), which are highly revered in Ayurveda for pacifying Vata, strengthening Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue), and providing natural calcium and lubricating fats. ••Here is the correct clinical preparation and proportion for your symptoms: The Proportions & Preparation ••Black Sesame Seeds: 1 Part (e.g., 50 grams) — Black sesame is highly preferred over white for therapeutic use as it possesses stronger antioxidant and nourishing properties. ••White Sesame Seeds: Optional, but if you mix them, keep a 1:1 ratio with the black seeds. ••Organic Jaggery (Guda): 1 Part (equal to the total weight of the seeds, e.g., 50 grams). Should they be fried? ••No, do not deep fry or dry roast them until they burn. You should lightly dry-toast the sesame seeds in a pan on very low heat for 2 to 3 minutes just until they release a warm aroma and slightly pop. Roasting makes them easier to digest and eliminates raw moisture. •How to Make and Consume It: Grind the lightly toasted, cooled sesame seeds into a coarse powder. Mash or blend the powder thoroughly with the jaggery. ••Roll the mixture into small, bite-sized balls (Laddus), roughly the size of a small walnut (approx. 10–15 grams each). Dosage: Consume one ball daily in the morning on an empty stomach, followed by a cup of warm water or warm milk. ••Vital Ayurvedic Protocols for Your Symptoms Because you are experiencing active swelling and “locking” in your fingers, home remedies alone may not suffice. Here is the approach a practitioner uses to address active Amavata: 1. The Golden Rule: Avoid Direct Oil Massage on Swollen Joints •If your joints are actively swollen, hot, or feel heavy, do not vigorously massage them with heavy oils (like plain sesame or mustard oil). In the presence of Ama (toxins), heavy oils act like pouring water on wet clay—it blocks the channels further and can worsen the swelling. ••What to do instead: Use dry heat or specialized poultices. A Valuka Potli (sand bag fomentation) or a dry heat compress helps dry up the inflammatory fluid (Ama) and relieves morning stiffness rapidly. ••Internal Anti-Inflammatory Support Classical formulations are specifically designed to dig out Ama and pacify Vata in the joints. You may want to consult a clinic to look into: ••Simhanada Guggulu or Yogaraja Guggulu: Classical herbo-mineral tablets that specifically target joint stiffness, locking fingers, and pain. ••Rasnasaptak Kwath or Maharasnadi Kadha: Powerful herbal decoctions that treat lower body stiffness and improve knee mobility. 3. Dietary Adjustments to Prevent Stiffness ••Strictly Avoid: Curds (yogurt), fermented foods, refined flour (maida), kidney beans, rajma, and heavy nightshades (like potatoes and eggplant), especially at night. These heavily increase Ama and Vata, making your next-morning stiffness much worse. ••Favor: Warm, easily digestible foods. Cook with spices like dry ginger (Sunthi), turmeric, and asafetida (Hing) which digest toxins and alleviate pain.
