For liver disorders, including liver cirrhosis and spleen issues, Ayurveda offers several herbal formulations. Liv-52 is a popular ayurvedic formulation that is often recommended for supporting liver health. It combines multiple herbs like Capparis spinosa (Himsra), Cichorium intybus (Kasani), which aid in protecting the liver and enhancing its functionlity. This formulation is generally taken two tablets twice daily after meals with lukewarm water.
Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) is another potent herb in Ayurveda known for its liver protective properties. Its bitter taste helps to detoxify the liver and regulate liver enzyme levels. You can take Kutki powder in the dosage of 1/4 teaspoon mixed with honey or warm water, before meals. However, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner regarding the precise dosage.
A combination of Trikatu (ginger, black pepper, long pepper) with Triphala (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki) is also beneficial. This combination not only helps in digesting toxins but also strengthens Agni (digestive fire) and regulates bile production, which is vital for liver health. You can take them in powder form, 1/2 teaspoon of each mixed together, twice daily.
Diet also plays a crucial role in supporting liver health. To maintain liver health, consume light and easily digestible foods, avoid oily, spicy and heavy meals, and limit intake of processed food and alcohol. Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants like turmeric and greens.
Daily lifestyle choices greatly impact liver health too. Practice daily yoga or meditation to reduce stress as it can affect liver function. Avoid unnecessary medications that burden the liver and get adequate rest.
In cases of advanced liver conditions such as cirrhosis, it is critical to follow the guidance of a healthcare professional. Ayurveda should be complementary to conventional treatment and not a replacement. Immediate medical intervention is required if condition is severe or worsening. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional before beginning any new treatment regimens.
