My sister is 38 years old and married. She currently has something like a fungal infection on one of her fingers, and also at the corner of the same hand. We consulted a skin specialist at a hospital — the doctor prescribed a tablet and a cream. It went away temporarily, but didn't completely heal. She also experiences itching. Her blood sugar is at the borderline level. What would you suggest?

For your sister’s condition, Ayurveda suggests addressing both external symptoms and the internal balance. Given the fungal infection and itching, it’s important to address Pitta and Kapha imbalances which might be aggravating her condition. Here’s a step-by-step approach she can consider:

1. Dietary Considerations: Incorporate foods that are more cooling and bitter. These can help pacify Pitta and Kapha doshas. Include leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and karela (bitter gourd) in her diet. Avoid sugar and high-carb foods, as it can exacerbate fungal infections and impact blood sugar levels. Stick to whole grains instead.

2. Topical Applications: She can use a paste made from neem (Azadirachta indica) and turmeric. Both have antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Mix 1 teaspoon of neem powder and 1⁄4 teaspoon of turmeric with a little water to form a paste. Apply this to the affected area once a day, leave it on for 30 mins, and then wash it off gently.

3. Herbal Remedies: Consuming herbal teas like Yashtimadhu (Licorice root) can also be beneficial. It has natural immune-enhancing properties and helps in skin problems. Take 1 teaspoon of Yashtimadhu powder in warm water twice a day.

4. Lifestyle Adjustments: Encourage regular yoga and breathing exercises to help maintain stress levels and improve skin condition. Pranayama like Anulom Vilom and Ujjayi could be beneficial.

5. Maintaining Hygiene: Keep the affected area dry and clean. Excess moisture and sweat can worsen fungal infections. Wear breathable, cotton gloves if necessary during household chores.

If symptoms persist, return to the dermatologist, as not all types of fungal infections can be managed through home remedies alone. Ayurvedic treaments can complement medical interventions, but it’s crucial to continue professional medical fosteps parallelly, especially with a borderline blood sugarsituation.

Given your sister’s condition, the persistence of the fungal infection on her finger could indicate an underlying imbalance that needs addressing, especially considering her borderline blood sugar levels. In Siddha-Ayurvedic terms, fungal infections are often linked to an imbalance in Kapha dosha and possibly Pitta, as both doshas can disrupt skin’s health and immunity in some instances. Here’s a holistic approach using Siddha principles:

First, maintaining blood sugar levels is crucial. Follow a diet that balances Kapha-Pitta. Encourage her to eat more vegetables like bitter gourd and fenugreek, which may help regulate blood sugar levels naturally. Her meals should be light and warm, avoiding excessive intake of sweets, dairy, and fried foods that aggravate kapha.

To directly tackle the infection, try applying juice from fresh turmeric mixed with neem leaves paste on the affected area at least twice daily. Turmeric and neem are known for their antimicrobial properties to help heal infections. Ensure the area is kept clean and dry, as dampness can worsen fungal infections.

Administering herbal concoctions to boost her body’s natural defenses can be helpful. A decoction of neem, triphala, and holy basil taken once or twice a day can strengthen her immune system. Aloe vera gel, applied topically, may soothe itching while aiding the skin’s recovery.

Internal digestion plays a pivotal role in her overall balance. Encourage her to sip warm water throughout the day to enhance Agni, helping to metabolize toxins. Incorporating mild herbal teas like ginger or cinnamon can further aid in balancing her digestion and metabolism.

Despite these measures, if the infection persists or worsens, immediate medical attention is necessary, given that untreated fungal infections and fluctuating blood sugar levels could lead to complications. Always consider seeking ongoing advice from experienced practitioners alongside any holistic attempts.
