how to cool down body - #36294

Lucy

I am feeling really overwhelmed with this heat wave lately. Like, the temperatures have been soaring, and it feels like my body is constantly on fire! I tried drinking more water and eating lighter foods, but I still feel like my body's just burning up. Last week, I started getting these weird heat rashes and I’m sweating way more than usual, even in the evenings. I went to the doctor, and they just said it’s probably just the weather and told me to stay hydrated. But I can’t help but feel there must be more to it than that. I’ve been reading about Ayurvedic methods and I'm really curious how to cool down body without relying on air-conditioning or just staying inside all day. I’ve heard about some herbs or maybe yoga poses that could help, but I don’t really know where to start. Like, do I need to make some special teas, or is there certain food I should avoid? There’s just so much info online, and I’m confused. Anyone have tips or personal experiences on how to cool down body in this crazy heat? I really want to get back to feeling normal and not just sweating buckets all the time! Thx!!!

During a heat wave, it’s important to focus on your Pitta dosha, which tends to be aggravated by heat. You’re already on the right path staying hydrated and opting for lighter foods, but there’s more you can do.

First, consider incorporating cooling herbs into your diet. Herbs like coriander, fennel, and mint can be very helpful. They can easily be added to your meals or consumed as teas. To prepare a simple fennel tea, just steep a teaspoon of fennel seeds in boiling water, let it cool, then drink it throughout the day. Also, try coriander water - soak a spoonful of coriander seeds overnight in water, strain it and sip it in the morning.

Avoiding certain foods is equally important. Stay away from spicy, sour, and acidic foods as they tend to increase heat in the body. Instead, focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, and light grains. Coconut water, cucumber, and melons are great choices for keeping cool.

Daily practices like Abhyanga (self-massage) with coconut oil or sunflower oil can help cool the body. Use cool oil and gently massage it over your body before a shower, if possible. This practice not only cools but also lubricates and nourishes the skin, enhancing the cooling effect.

Yoga can also contribute significantly. Cooling pranayama techniques like Sheetali (cooling breath) or Sheetkari (hissing breath) can be beneficial. Practice these in the morning or evening when it’s cooler outside. Asanas such as forward bends and gentle stretches can help calm the mind and body, but avoid excessively vigorous yoga practices which might increase internal heat.

Lastly, lifestyle modifications like wearing light-colored, loose clothing made of natural fibers, and avoiding excessive sun exposure will help as well.

If symptoms persist or you feel excessively uncomfortable, it might be advisable to consult with a practitioner for personalized advice. Consider getting a more detailed evaluation of your dosha balance to tailor these suggestions more specifically to your constitution.

To cool down your body naturally, we should consider the balance of doshas, which, in your case, seems like an aggravation of pitta dosha due to the heat. The symptoms you’re experiencing, like excessive sweating and heat rashes, are consistent with an increased pitta, which governs heat and metabolism in the body.

Start by including more cooling foods and drinks in your diet. Favor naturally hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, and coconut water. Coconut water is particularly beneficial as it not only cools the body but also restores electrolytes lost through excessive sweating. Try to drink a glass around mid-morning, when the heat tends to rise.

Next, consider herbal teas that support cooling like coriander tea. Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds in water, strain, and drink it once cooled. Mint tea can be another good option; it has a soothing effect on an overheated system. Brahmi and Shatavari are potent herbs that pacify pitta; these can be taken as supplements, but please consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personal dosages.

In terms of yoga, incorporate poses that facilitate cooling, such as Shitali Pranayama (cooling breath) and Moon Salutations. These help calm the body and reduce internal heat. Practice in a shaded, ventilated space to avoid overheating.

Try to minimize the intake of spicy foods, caffeine, and fried items that aggravate pitta. Nightshade vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants might also contribute to internal heat, reduce their consumption for the time being.

Moreover, wear light, breathable clothing made of cotton and avoid dark colors that absorb heat. Bathing using cool water or applying a paste of sandalwood mixed with a bit of rose water to the skin adds calming relief to heat rashes.

Ensure you’re resting adequately; lack of sleep can aggravate pitta and exacerbate feelings of heat and irritation. Avoid screen exposure late at night and practice calming activities like meditation or listening to relaxing music.

Sustaining these routines can help restore balance, but if symptoms persist or worsen, consider seeking further evaluation from an Ayurvedic specialist. Remember, your body is unique, and small adjustments might be necessary to find what works best for you in cooling down effectively during such hot spells.
