how to fix acidity - #37050

Liam

I am really struggling with my acidity lately, and I don’t know what to do. It's been a few months now, to be honest. At first, it was just a bit of heartburn after meals, but then it got worse. I feel this burning sensation in my chest, and sometimes even in my throat, like I just can’t eat anything without paying for it later. My doctor said I should watch my diet, but I’m not sure where to start. I've done some online research and found lots of info on how to fix acidity, but not all of it seems practical. Some recommend cutting out coffee completely, which I depend on, while others say it’s okay in moderation. I’ve tried drinking water with lemon in it, thinking it might help balance things out, but it sometimes feels like it makes it worse. I want to know how to fix acidity in a natural way. Should I be avoiding certain foods? Are there herbs or remedies, like turmeric or ginger, that could help? Also, what about the timing of meals, like how close to bedtime should I stop eating? Just feels a bit overwhelming right now, and any advice or personal experiences would really mean a lot!

Addressing acidity through Ayurveda entails balancing the excess Pitta dosha as this condition often stems from an overactive digestive fire (agni). Implementing dietary and lifestyle changes can significantly alleviate your symptoms. Begin with dietary modifications. Avoid spicy, oily and fermented foods as these can exacerbate acidity. Favor cooling, soothing foods like cucumbers, melons, bananas, and coconut water. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also be beneficial, preventing the digestive system from becoming overwhelmed.

When it comes to beverages, prefer herbal teas or lukewarm water. Coffee can be a major irritant due to its heat-promoting qualities, so it might be best to limit its intake if eliminating it completely seems daunting. As for remedies, turmeric and ginger can be helpful, but in moderation, as they are heating in nature. Instead, cooling herbs like coriander, fennel, or mint can be valuable allies in calming the digestive fire — you might try steeping fennel seeds in hot water for a soothing tea.

Regarding meal timing, it is recommended to finish eating at least 2-3 hours before lying down for bed. This gives your body time to properly digest food, reducing nighttime acidity. Additionally, consider incorporating yoga or light walks post-meals to aid digestion.

Pay attention to stress, too, as it often aggravates acidity. Meditation or deep breathing exercises can be beneficial in maintaining a calm mind. Prioritize these lifestyle and feeding adjustments, and reassess how you’re feeling in the coming weeks. If severe symptoms persist, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for more personalized advice might be warranted!
