Yes, olive oil can be a suitable choice for oil pulling, especially since you find its taste more appealing than coconut oil. In Ayurveda, oil pulling is known as “gandusha,” and it offers benefits for oral health by drawing out toxins and supporting gum health. While coconut oil is traditionally favored due to its anti-bacterial properties, olive oil is also very beneficial.

Given your vikruti of kapha/pitta and prakruti of vata/pitta, olive oil can be a good option as it is less heavy and more warming compared to coconut oil, fitting better within the balance you aim to achieve. Olive oil’s warming qualities can aid in balancing vata, and its slightly unctuous nature helps soothe pitta without excessively aggravating kapha.

For oil pulling, take approximately one tablespoon of olive oil. Swish the oil gently in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes, ideally in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Be mindful to keep the swishing gentle so as not to tire your jaw muscles. After swishing, spit the oil into a trash can (rather than a sink to avoid plumbing issues) and rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water. You can follow with regular brushing and flossing to ensure complete oral hygiene.

Ensure that the olive oil you use is cold-pressed and virgin to retain its beneficial properties. While oil pulling, do observe any changes in oral health or discomfort, and adjust the practice or consult a practitioner if needed. Since your prakruti includes vata, which is prone to dryness, maintaining adequate hydration is crucial. Include plenty of warm fluids within your daily routine.

Remember, oil pulling should complement, not replace, regular oral hygiene practices and healthy lifestyle choices. It can be a valuable addition to your self-care routine, supporting both oral health and broader well-being according to Ayurvedic principles.
