what is ratti - #37927

Aria

I am really confused and need some help here! I recently started learning about Ayurveda and came across this term "ratti." Like, what is ratti anyway? Does it have something to do with health or is it more about wellness in general? I heard my friend mentioning ratti while we were discussing natural remedies, and she seemed super enthusiastic about the benefits of it. I tried to look it up online but got a million different answers. Some sources said it's a form of measurement used to weigh herbs or medicines, and others mentioned that it relates to gemstones or something. I mean, my head is spinning! Right now, I'm struggling with some digestive issues, and I thought maybe ratti has some connection with that, but then again, it might not. I’ve been feeling bloated and really uncomfortable, and if ratti is a part of herbs I could use, that would be amazing! Can anyone clarify what is ratti exactly? Is it something that can help with specific health problems or is it just a traditional practice? Thx in advance for any insights!

Ratti, in the Ayurvedic and traditional Indian context, refers primarily to a unit of measurement. It’s often used for weighing medicines, herbs, or metals, rather than being a therapeutic substance itself. Traditionally, one ratti is approximately equal to 120 milligrams, although this can vary slightly in different regions or contexts. It’s based on the mass of the seeds of the Abrus precatorius plant, also known as gunja or jequirity.

Ratti’s role is more about standardization in Ayurveda, providing a consistent system to quantify the amount of an herb or a medicine being prescribed. This precision helps in tailoring dosage, an important factor in both Ayurvedic treatments and preparing herbal formulations, for ensuring efficacy and safety. So when it comes to herbs or medicines to treat any health imbalances, including digestive problems like bloating, ratti would be used as a metric to measure ingredients rather than a remedy on its own.

For your digestive issues, Ayurveda often addresses these by balancing your digestive fire (agni) and doshas (especially pitta dosha) through diet, herbs, and lifestyle adjustments. To calm bloating, you might consider including warming spices in your diet like ginger or fennel, which can help improve digestion. Sipping on warm water throughout the day can also help. Additionally, ensuring meals are regular without long gaps, and eating in a relaxed environment can often significantly soothe digestive discomfort.

If you’re exploring Ayurveda on your own, remember that while incorporating herbs can support digestion, understanding your unique constitution (prakriti) through a consultation can guide specific recommendations. And as always, if symptoms persist or cause significant discomfort, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional.
