is copper water bottle good for health - #38263

Audrey

I am really curious about this whole copper water bottle thing. I’ve been reading and hearing about how it can be beneficial, but I'm not sure. A week ago, I got a copper water bottle after my friend raved about it. She said it helped her with digestive issues and energy levels. I thought, why not give it a try? So, I started drinking from this copper water bottle daily. But honestly, I'm a bit worried. A few days in, I noticed my stomach felt kind of funny, like there was a weird heaviness. And I keep wondering, is copper water bottle good for health or am I just overthinking? Like, I really want to believe in the benefits! But what if I'm actually causing my body more harm? I’ve read mixed reviews online. Some people say it’s like a detox, while others warn about copper toxicity. I don’t want to end up with metal poisoning or something dramatic like that! Can drinking from a copper water bottle really balance my doshas or whatever? Any advice would be amazing because I’m kinda lost here, and I don't want to ditch it if its actually healthy. Is there a certain amount I should be drinking? Feeling confused!

Doctors' responses

Copper water bottles have become popular due to their Ayurvedic origins, where copper is revered for its potential health benefits. In Ayurveda, drinking water stored in a copper vessel is called “tamra jal,” believed to balance the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Copper is also thought to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, benefiting digestion, joint health, and even weight loss when used properly.

Yet, when it comes to your stomach feeling funny after using a copper water bottle, this could hint at overexposure to copper. While your friend might’ve had positive experiences, it doesn’t automatically mean the same results for you. Not everyone’s digestion or constitution react the same say. The slight heaviness might arise if the water was stored too long or if your body needs time adjusting. Ideally, water should stored in copper vessel for about 7-8 hours or overnight, but not excessively longer. Drinking 2-3 cups of such water a day is usually considered to be safe, yet if it feels too strong, reduce to 1-2 cups initially, to see how it impacts you.

Copper toxicity is rare but can occur when the body’s capacity to metabolize copper is overloaded. If symptoms like nausea or odd abdominal sensations persist, it would be cautious to re-evaluate. It’s less likely that drinking from a copper bottle would result in toxicity quickly but moderation and observation is key.

While Ayurvedic practices praise copper’s detoxifying properties, approaching it with balance and attentiveness to your body’s signals is crucial. Remember, Ayurveda emphasizes personalized approaches; not every remedy suits every person. If discomfort continues, consulting someone with specialized knowledge in Ayurvedic medicine might help. Your body’s response should guide whether copper is right for you.

Copper water bottles are quite popular for their purported health benefits in traditional practices, including some principles in Siddha-Ayurveda. Drinking water that’s been stored in a copper vessel can indeed provide certain benefits, as copper is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It has a role in balancing all three doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—to some extent, by enhancing digestion and metabolism, particularly affecting the agni, or digestive fire.

Storing water in a copper vessel overnight or for about 6-8 hours is believed to allow the water to imbibe beneficial properties. However, it’s crucial not to overdo it, as excessive copper intake can indeed lead to toxicity, known as copper toxicity, causing symptoms like gastric distress, headaches, or even more severe consequences in higher exposures. For most people, drinking about two to three glasses of such water in a day should be safe and potentially beneficial.

The “funny” stomach feeling you’re noticing could be your body’s response to an initial adjustment. Ensuring you’re not over-consuming can help alleviate adverse feelings. Observing how your body responds over a few days or a week is wise. If discomfort persists, it may be wise to reduce the amount you’re drinking and see if symptoms subside.

Copper tower water won’t magically fix imbalances in your doshas by itself; targeted dietary and lifestyle adjustments are necessary for that. Monitor how your body feels—if any significant discomfort continues, or if you notice other symptoms developing, it might be worthwhile to consult with a healthcare professional to check levels of copper in your system. Better to be cautious and ensure no bigger underlying issue. Remember, moderation is key, like with most things.
