can we keep hot water in copper bottle - #38502

Brooklyn

I am really confused about something and hope someone here can help me out! I've been trying to be more health conscious lately, and I read somewhere that drinking from a copper bottle can have amazing benefits, like improved digestion and antioxidant properties. But, here’s the thing – I'm not sure if I should be putting hot water in the copper bottle or not? Like, can we keep hot water in a copper bottle? A few weeks ago, I started filling my copper bottle with hot water in the mornings, thinking it would be good for detoxifying or whatever. But then I saw this post online saying it might not be safe or that it could oxidize the copper. Now, I'm worried if I am doing something wrong here. I also noticed my copper bottle has started looking kinda dull, and I don’t know if it’s normal or if I ruined it somehow!! Can we keep hot water in copper bottle or should I just be using it for cold or room temp drinks? Also, how do I know if my bottle is safe to use since I don’t want to go and get sick or something. Help!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to using a copper bottle for storing hot water, a bit of caution is necessary. The ancient Ayurvedic texts do commend the use of copper vessels for water stored overnight, which is typically at room temperature. This process, known as tamra jal, is believed to infuse the water with beneficial copper ions, which might support your digestion and provide some antioxidant support, However, storing hot water in copper bottles is not advised. Copper can react with heat, potentially leading to undesirable chemical interactions. When the copper becomes oxidized in the presence of hot water, this not only reduces its beneficial attributes but can also lead to a further metallic taste or toxicity.

Moreover, since you’ve noticed your copper bottle appearing dull, it might be due to oxidation which, can be accelerated by placing hot liquids in it. To rejuvenate the appearance of your copper bottle, a gentle cleaning with lemon and salt or vinegar and salt may help remove oxidation. Just scrub lightly and rinse thoroughly

For practical usage, it is safer to store cool or room temperature water, allowing it to sit for 6-8 hours. Sip small amount throughout the day for digestive support. But if you are looking for warm detox water, consider preparing your warm herbal infusions or teas in other vessels and merely using the copper bottle for cold to moderately warm liquids.

Finally, regarding safety, regularly check inside for discoloration and any off-putting scent. An occasional clean with the lemon/salt mix is usually sufficient for maintenance, Always err on the side of caution if your bottle doesn’t seem right, and consult a professional if you experience any adverse effects.
