what to eat during cold and fever - #39060

Lucas

I am struggling to figure out what to eat during cold and fever, and it's driving me a bit nuts! Last week, I caught this awful cold. Coughing, sneezing, and then, boom, fever hit! I’ve been trying to stick to soups and warm drinks, but honestly, I’m not sure if that’s enough or even right. My mom swears by ginger tea, but then I read somewhere that some raw foods might be good too? Is that true? Anyways, I made this chicken soup like my grandma used to, but I just feel like it’s not doing enough. I also tried some rice with turmeric, which seemed to help a little but I'm really confused about what to eat during cold and fever. Like, should I focus on more spicy foods or avoid them? Should dairy be a no-go? It’s hard with my appetite being all messed up. I just want to know from you guys what to eat during cold and fever so I can kick this thing to the curb quickly! Thanks for any tips or recipes you might have.

When dealing with cold and fever, it’s essential to focus on foods that are light, nourishing, and easy on digestion to help your body heal. In Ayurveda, maintaining a balance of agni (digestive fire) is crucial, especially during illness when it tends to be weaker. Let’s dive into some practical advice you can follow.

Warm, cooked foods are preferred during a cold and fever, they’re easier to digest and help maintain your body warmth. Continue with soups, like the chicken soup you mentioned, as they’re hydrating and can be enriched with warming spices such as ginger, black pepper, and cumin. These can boost your immune system and clear excess mucus.

Your mom’s suggestion of ginger tea is excellent—it increases your internal warmth and helps reduce congestion. Avoid raw foods during this period; they’re often more difficult to digest and don’t provide the same comfort as warm, cooked meals. Instead, focus on steamed vegetables like carrots or spinach, lightly spiced with turmeric and black pepper, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Rice with turmeric was a good choice, as turmeric is known for its medicinal properties. Also, try kichari—a mix of rice and mung dal cooked with spices like cumin and asafoetida. It’s light, nourishing, and balances your doshas, especially vata and kapha, which often become aggravated during a cold and fever.

Avoid dairy as it can increase mucus production, unless it’s warm spiced milk with ginger or turmeric. Spicy foods in moderation can be beneficial, as they promote circulation and clear congestion, but avoid excess as it may upset your digestion.

Keep hydrating with warm fluids and ensure rest to recover. If any symptoms worsen, seek medical advice. Your body’s telling you it needs gentle care, so focus on warm, cooked, easy-to-digest foods and stay warm.
