do ashwagandha increase weight - #39425

Ellie

I am really confused about something. I started taking ashwagandha like a month ago because I've heard all this great stuff about it for stress and anxiety, you know? Plus, I thought it might help with my energy levels too, but now I’m worried about my weight. I’ve been kinda keeping an eye on it lately, and it feels like I’ve gained a couple pounds, which isn’t what I wanted at all!! I thought ashwagandha was supposed to help with metabolism and not make you gain weight? Like, do ashwagandha increase weight, or am I just imagining things? Also, I’ve not changed my diet that much—maybe added a few more snacks here and there because I feel a bit more relaxed, but shouldn’t it balance out, right? I’m unsure if it’s the ashwagandha or just me being lazy about exercise lately, but I remember reading somewhere that some people experience weight gain while using it. I just want to make sure I’m not doing something wrong or that I should stop taking it. Any advice would be awesome!!

Ashwagandha, known as Withania somnifera, is a revered herb in Ayurveda and it’s got quite a few well-documented benefits, particularly when it comes to combating stress and anxiety. The adaptogenic properties of Ashwagndha can help balance cortisol levels, which could be beneficial if you’re dealing with chronic stress. Meanwhile, its effect on weight isn’t always straightforward.

While Ashwagandha can potentially support metabolism, its primary action is about balance and reducing stress. In some individuals, lower stress levels might lead to increased appetite, especially if stress was previously suppressing your hunger. This could be why you’ve noticed slight weight gain. It’s important to note that ashwagandha itself doesn’t directly lead to weight gain by altering your metabolism negatively.

Your recent weight changes might also stem from the relaxed feeling you mentioned, potentially causing a slight increase in dietary intake or less urgency in maintaining a rigorous exercise routine. If ashwagandha induced a state of an increased appetite, this could naturally contribute to a small weight gain if caloric intake exceeds what you are burning.

To address these concerns, consider monitoring your dietary habits more closely. Aim for balanced meals with whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables. Control portion sizes, and focus on satvik food that strengthens digestion without adding extra calories. Also, integrate routine physical activity that you enjoy, to counter balance any extra calories you might be consuming. Yoga or brisk walking can be wonderful ways to maintain active.

If you intend to continue taking Ashwagandha, do so with awareness and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. It’s always a good plan to consult a healthcare professional familiar with your personal health context, for customized advice. Remember, every individual’s reaction to herbs can vary based on their unique prakriti (constitution), so pay close attention to your body’s signals. If weight gain persists or bothers you, reviewing the dosage with an Ayurvedic practitioner might be helpful.
