can i take shilajit before bed - #40467

Luke

I am really confused about this whole shilajit thing. I've been hearing a lot about its benefits, and honestly, my sleep has been really rough lately. Like, I wake up all the time and even when I do sleep, it's not deep or restful ya know? I started looking into shilajit because I've read it helps with energy and stamina, which sounds good, but I also wonder if it can impact sleep. Last week, I tried taking shilajit in the afternoon, but I felt a bit jittery — probably not the best idea. A friend suggested that maybe I should try shilajit before bed instead, but I’m not sure if that’s a good move. Can I take shilajit before bed without it messing things up even more? Like, will it help me sleep better, or is it gonna keep me up even longer? I keep doubting my choices here. Should I just stick to using it in the morning? Also, do I need to think about dosages or anything specific when I take shilajit before bed? I just want something to help me settle down and relax, ugh. Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Taking shilajit before bed to improve sleep can be a bit confusing. Its primary benefits include boosting energy and stamina, enhancing performance and potentially improving cognitive functions. Since you experienced feeling jittery after consuming it in the afternoon, it indicates that shilajit might have stimulating effects for you, which isn’t ideal for bedtime.

In Ayurveda, it’s essential we consider your prakriti (constitution) and dosha imbalance when prescribing remedies. Shilajit is considered to have a heating quality (ushna virya) and intense energy. It mainly pacifies Vata and Kapha doshas while potentially aggravating Pitta due to its heating nature. Perhaps the restlessness and interrupted sleep might relate to a Pitta imbalance or increased Vata that needs calming, especially if heating substances such as shilajit are involved.

For sleep disturbances, aligning with your natural circadian rhythm might be more beneficial. Try taking shilajit earlier in the day, perhaps with breakfast or lunch, to prevent stimulating effects later on. For calming doshas and enhancing sleep, consider Ashwagandha, an adaptogen with soothing properties, before bed instead. A warm glass of milk with a pinch of nutmeg or turmeric can also balance doshas, promoting restful sleep.

Dosage is crucial: generally, start with 300-500 mg of high-quality shilajit resin daily. Morning use alongside a meal is usually effective without overstimulating. Ensure you’re hydrating well since shilajit is a natural electrolyte. If issues persist, consult a certified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized karmacy and holistic advice tailored to your specific dosha, sleep pattern, and lifestyle.

If sleep disruptions continue, it might be worthwhile to assess your evening routine. Minimize screen exposure in the hour before sleep, opting for calming activities like reading or meditation. Also look into your sleep environment, making it conducive to relaxation, with proper temperature and lighting. These changes together with the right Ayurvedic regimen could significantly enhance your rest.
