What Are The Key Differences Between Neurofibromatosis Type 1 And Type 2? - #60287

I am really worried about these bumps I have got. I have got these neurofibromas, and my doc said they might be related to neurofibromatosis type 1, but like, how do I know? I mean, can neurofibromas go away on their own? Or do they just stay there forever? I didn’t even know about NF1 until I saw a specialist last month after finding out my cousin has it too. I have these two lumps on my side, and they itch sometimes, and I'm just kind of lost on what to do. Like, I'm wondering if there are differences between neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2 that I should be aware of or if I could have NF1 and not even know it. Is that possible? I have read some stuff saying symptoms vary and that some people might not notice anything until later. What exactly should I be looking out for? Honestly, the idea of surgery for neurofibromas treatment feels super scary, especially if I don’t even know how bad it really is yet. I just want to understand if there are options that aren't as intense or if there's a way to manage these bumps without going under the knife. Any advice or insights would be super helpful!

Neurofibromas treatment primarily involves monitoring the growths and addressing any symptoms they may cause. While many neurofibromas are benign and do not require intervention, surgical removal may be necessary if they lead to pain, discomfort, or functional issues.

Q: Can neurofibromas go away?
A: Neurofibromas typically do not go away on their own, as they are usually stable once formed. However, some may shrink or change over time, but complete disappearance is rare.

Q: What are the key differences between neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2?
A: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is characterized by the presence of multiple neurofibromas, café-au-lait spots, and skinfold freckling, while neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) primarily involves bilateral vestibular schwannomas and fewer neurofibromas. NF1 is more common than NF2 and usually presents earlier in life.

Q: Can you have NF1 and not know it?
A: Yes, it is possible to have neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and not be aware of it, especially if the symptoms are mild or not easily recognizable. Some individuals may have few or subtle signs, leading to a delayed diagnosis until more prominent symptoms develop.

Q: What are the symptoms of neurofibromatosis type 1?
A: Symptoms of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) include the presence of multiple neurofibromas, café-au-lait spots, freckling in unusual areas, and potential learning disabilities. Additional symptoms may involve bone deformities and an increased risk of certain tumors, which can vary widely among individuals.
