Hypercholesterolemia
Cholesterol is classified as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL cholesterol is called "bad" cholesterol, because elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. LDL lipoprotein deposits cholesterol on the artery walls, causing the formation of a hard, thick substance called cholesterol plaque. HDL cholesterol is called the "good cholesterol" because HDL cholesterol particles prevent atherosclerosis by extracting cholesterol from the artery walls and disposing of them through the liver.
Causes:
High cholesterol levels are due to a variety of factors including heredity, diet, and lifestyle. Less commonly, underlying illnesses affecting the liver, thyroid, or kidney may affect blood cholesterol levels.
Consequences:
Too much cholesterol in the bloodstream, the excess may be deposited in arteries, including the coronary arteries of the heart, the carotid arteries to the brain, and the arteries that supply blood to the legs. Cholesterol deposits are a component of the plaques that cause narrowing and blockage of the arteries, producing signs and symptoms originating from the particular part of the body that has decreased blood supply.
Food Regime:
Do’s: Eat whole grains, Nuts, seeds, legumes, whole wheat bread, Eat more fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and can help lower cholesterol levels,
Don’ts: Avoid too much fat culinary preparations such as fried foods, also avoid bakery products and pastries, ice cream and rich cream
