Kidney stones are the solid, crystalline deposits that develop in the kidneys as a result of the accumulation of minerals and salts in the urine. Common varieties range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball and are generated from specific mineral combinations. They include calcium oxalate, struvite, uric acid, and cystine stones. Kidney stones are mostly caused by imbalances in the urine composition. Some of the factors that lead to its formation include heredity, food, dehydration, and certain medical disorders. Dehydration causes urine to become concentrated, which leads to the crystallization of minerals. Diets rich in high-oxalate foods, such as nuts and beets, can cause calcium-oxalate stones.

Signs and Symptoms

If you’re unsure whether the pain in your stomach arises from kidney stones, there are certain major signs you should be aware of. Severe abdominal pain located just below the ribs that radiates to the front is one of the main symptoms of kidney stones. Additionally, there will be a burning sensation and uneasy pain when urinating. Moreover, the urine’s color may be a little intense. Nausea and vomiting might be other signs of various conditions. If the patient has additional kidney-related illnesses, the symptoms may be severe. Likewise, it is advisable to see a doctor if the condition is serious because it may be connected to other affairs. In severe cases of stone impaction in the tract there could be hydronephrosis, severe pain and bleeding through urine.

Types of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are of four types and it varies according to different people.

  • Calcium Ooxalate Sstones: The most common type of kidney stones are calcium oxalate stones. This kind of kidney stone is brought on by excessive calcium or oxalate concentrations in the urine.
  • Uric Aacid Sstones: This is often found in patients with chronic diseases and malabsorption that causes excessive fluid loss.
  • Struvite Sstones: They appear as a result of a urinary tract infection.
  • Cystine Sstones: It is the result of a hereditary condition known as cystinuria. Individuals suffering from the above-mentioned condition have excessive urinary excretion of specific amino acids.

How Ayurveda treats kidney stone

Kidney stones are considered an imbalance of the doshas, mainly Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda emphasizes balancing these doshas for overall health and avoiding the recurrence of stones. Ayurvedic remedies for kidney stones include dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and lifestyle modifications. Personalized plans take into account each person’s constitution, lifestyle, and type of stone; examples include herbal formulations like Punarnavadi Guggulu and Varunadi Kwath. Panchakarma treatment, an Ayurvedic detoxification therapy, helps eliminate toxins and restore equilibrium.

The causes of kidney stones range from factors, such as an imbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle and spicy food. Less water consumption is also a major cause of kidney stones. These factors cause problems in the various doshas in the human body, leading to diseases. It leads to toxin formation in the body called ama.

These toxins trickle down to the urinary tract, causing crystals to form, thus leading to kidney stones.

Ayurvedic remedies consist of using diuretic herbs to dissolve the stones. Once the stones are dissolved, it is then recommended to use various cleansing techniques such as panchakarma which helps in strengthening the body. It is recommended to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily, and urinate whenever the urge occurs.

If the bladder stores the urine for a long time, then it leads to kidney stones. You need to cut down on foods that contain salt in excess. Add more green vegetables to your diet as they provide the body with essential nutrients such as calcium.

A comprehensive list of the changes you should make are:

  • Avoid eating dry and heavy foods
  • Limit consumption of coffee, tea, pickle based foods and cold drinks
  • Restrict consumption of non-vegetarian foods such meat and poultry
  • Drink adequate water regularly
  • Consume parboiled rice, brown rice and ginger
  • Consume lots of fruit juices, soup and water
  • Increase water consumption during summer months
  • Don’t suppress the urge to urinate
  • Increase consumption of horse-gram as it decreases risk of kidney stones.
  • Make sure you exercise on a regular basis as it improves your overall well-being and keeps you healthy.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Kidney Stone

  • Pashanabheda: Because of its lithotriptic qualities, which indicate it may help dissolve and remove kidney stones, pashanabheda is often used in Ayurveda. It is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may lessen kidney stone pain and inflammation.
  • Gokshura: Gokshura has long been recognized for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. It helps maintain the health of the urinary system and can be effective in controlling and preventing kidney stones.
  • Punarnava: Punarnava is prized for its diuretic qualities, which encourage a regular flow of urine and facilitate the removal of toxins. It is well known for its general kidney-supportive properties and is considered to be beneficial in preventing the formation of kidney stones.

Home remedies for kidney stones

Ayurvedic treatment for kidney stone prevention involves a healthy lifestyle that includes eating right and staying hydrated. Although consulting a healthcare provider is essential, the following common household remedies may help avoid the formation of stones:

  • Remain Hydrated: To reduce the amount of urine substances that can lead to stone formation, consume eight to ten glasses of water each day.
  • Lemon Juice: Due to its citrate concentration, fresh lemon juice helps avoid some types of stones. If citrus fruit oxalates are the cause of your calcium oxalate stones, proceed with caution.
  • Minimize Salt Intake: Limit sodium consumption to avoid higher urine excretion of calcium, which lowers the risk of calcium-containing stones.
  • Moderate Protein Consumption: To maintain a balanced protein consumption, choose plant-based proteins such as nuts, tofu, and legumes.
  • Reduce Oxalate-Rich Foods: Eat foods high in oxalate, such as nuts and beets, in limited amounts, particularly to prevent calcium oxalate stones.
