Male fertility supplements work on a slower clock than most men expect. A sperm cell takes roughly two and a half months to build and another two weeks to mature on its way out, so nothing you swallow today shows up in a semen analysis next week. Whatever works, works on the batch being made right now.
That single fact explains most of the disappointment in this category. Men take a fertility blend for four weeks, retest, see nothing, and conclude supplements are a scam. They aren't — but they are a three-month commitment, and the ingredient list matters far more than the brand on the tub.

What Supplements Are Good for Male Fertility?

CoQ10 — the One to Start With
Sperm swim on mitochondria packed into the midpiece, and CoQ10 is central to how those mitochondria make energy. It is also concentrated in seminal fluid, where it works as an antioxidant.
Trials in men with poor semen parameters have generally used 200–300 mg daily for three to six months, and they most consistently report improvements in motility and concentration. What those trials have not reliably shown is an increase in live births — an honest distinction worth knowing before you spend.
Ubiquinol is the reduced form and absorbs somewhat better. Take either with a meal containing fat.
Zinc and Folate — Real, but Oversold Together
Zinc is genuinely central to male reproduction. It concentrates in the prostate and seminal plasma, participates in testosterone metabolism, and deficiency clearly damages sperm production.
But correcting a deficiency and supplementing an already-adequate man are different things. A large US randomised trial of folic acid plus zinc, in men from couples seeking fertility treatment, found no improvement in live birth rates and no improvement in semen quality. That result is the strongest argument in this whole field for testing rather than guessing.
Zinc still belongs in a protocol — for men whose diets are low in it, who are vegetarian, or who drink heavily, all of which deplete it. Above 40 mg daily over months, zinc starts blocking copper absorption.
Selenium and Vitamin E
Selenium is built into the protein scaffold holding the sperm midpiece together, which is why deficiency shows up as poor motility and misshapen tails. It is usually paired with vitamin E, and the pairing has more supporting data than either alone.
The safety margin is narrow. The tolerable upper limit is 400 mcg a day, and genuine toxicity — hair loss, brittle nails, a metallic taste — is documented. Two Brazil nuts give you a day's worth, so read every label to avoid stacking it twice.
L-Carnitine
Carnitine is concentrated in the epididymis, where sperm learn to swim, and it ferries fatty acids into mitochondria for fuel. Trials use 2–3 g daily, often as a mix of L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine, over three to six months, with motility the parameter most likely to move.
Antioxidants — and Why More Is Worse
Oxidative stress damages sperm DNA, and antioxidants reduce oxidative stress. The logic is sound, and Cochrane's reviewers have found a possible benefit for pregnancy rates while rating the certainty of that evidence as low.
Here's the part supplement marketing leaves out: sperm need a controlled amount of oxidation to compact their DNA properly during maturation. Flooding the system with high-dose antioxidants can interfere with that step. This is the "antioxidant paradox," and it is a real reason men on aggressive stacks sometimes see DNA fragmentation get worse, not better.
Moderate doses. Preferably from food. That is the whole rule.
The Ayurvedic Layer: Shukra Dhatu and Vajikarana
Ayurveda treats reproductive tissue — shukra dhatu — as the last and most refined of the seven bodily tissues. Everything you eat is transformed step by step through plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone and marrow before any of it becomes shukra.
The practical implication is blunt: if digestion is poor or you are depleted, the raw material never reaches the end of the chain. This is why Ayurveda rarely treats sperm quality as an isolated problem. It treats agni (digestive fire) and ojas (vitality, the fine essence of good digestion) first, then applies vajikarana — the classical branch of medicine dedicated to reproductive strength.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
The most researched Ayurvedic herb in this space. Small controlled trials in men with low sperm counts have reported improvements in sperm concentration, motility and serum testosterone after around three months, alongside reductions in oxidative markers in semen.
It also lowers cortisol, and chronic stress is a real, measurable suppressor of reproductive hormones. For the stressed, under-slept, over-worked man — which is a large share of men presenting with subfertility — ashwagandha addresses cause rather than symptom.
Typical use: 300–600 mg of a root extract daily, or 3–6 g of the powder in warm milk at night. Caution with thyroid medication (it can raise thyroid hormone levels), with autoimmune conditions, and with sedatives.
Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens)
Velvet bean. It naturally contains L-dopa, the precursor to dopamine, and dopamine influences prolactin — which in turn influences testosterone. Indian clinical studies in infertile men have reported improved sperm count and motility along with changes in reproductive hormone levels.
Because it is genuinely dopaminergic, kapikacchu is one herb you should not self-prescribe if you take antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics or Parkinson's medication. That is a pharmacological interaction, not a theoretical one.
Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum)
A classical vajikarana tuber, used as a rasayana (rejuvenative) for depleted, thin, dry vata-type men. Most supporting research is animal work rather than human trials, so we present it as traditional practice with promising preclinical data, not a proven intervention.
Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris)
Traditionally used for urinary and reproductive complaints. Its reputation as a testosterone booster runs well ahead of the human evidence, which is weak. Its more defensible use is the classical one: supporting urinary flow and the reproductive channels, usually within a formula rather than solo.
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) for Men
Widely assumed to be a women's herb. In classical practice it is used for men too, specifically the pitta-dominant man who runs hot, irritable and inflamed. Shatavari is cooling and nourishing, and it balances the heating effect of herbs like gokshura in a combined formula. Heat is bad for sperm — internally as well as externally.
How Do I Boost My Fertility as a Man?
Supplements sit on top of a foundation. If the foundation is missing, they have little to work with.
- Get the heat off. The testes sit outside the body for a reason. Laptops on the lap, hot tubs, saunas, heated seats and long cycling sessions all raise scrotal temperature enough to matter.
- Stop smoking and cut alcohol. Both are directly linked to lower counts and higher DNA fragmentation.
- Sleep. Testosterone is released largely during sleep. Six broken hours a night undoes a lot of supplementation.
- Move, but don't overtrain. Moderate exercise helps; extreme endurance volume can suppress reproductive hormones.
- Never take testosterone. Exogenous testosterone shuts down the signal that drives sperm production and can cause complete absence of sperm. If a clinic has offered you testosterone while you're trying to conceive, get a second opinion.
- Check the medicine cabinet. Some common drugs — including certain hair-loss treatments, anabolic agents and long-term opioids — suppress spermatogenesis.
How to Make Sperm Thicker and Stronger
Semen thickness and volume are not the same as fertility, and conflating them causes needless worry. Volume mostly reflects hydration and how long since the last ejaculation. What actually determines fertility is concentration, motility, morphology and DNA integrity — measurable only on a semen analysis.
The WHO's current lower reference limits sit around 16 million sperm per millilitre, 30% progressive motility and 4% normal forms. Below those, a urologist should be involved, not a supplement.
From the Ayurvedic side, the traditional shukra-building foods are simple and unglamorous: ghee, whole milk, soaked almonds, dates, black sesame, urad dal and mung. Warm, oily, sweet-tasting, easy to digest. Ayurveda regards excessive dry, cold, bitter and astringent food, along with irregular meals, as depleting to shukra.
Do Fertility Pills Really Work for Men?
Some do, for some men, and the honest answer has three parts.
They work best when they are correcting something. A zinc-deficient man responds to zinc. A man with high oxidative stress responds to antioxidants. A stressed, exhausted man responds to ashwagandha. A man with normal parameters and none of these issues will generally see very little.
They improve semen parameters more reliably than they improve births. Most published trials measure sperm counts, not babies. That gap is real, and reputable sources acknowledge it.
They cannot fix mechanical problems. Varicocele, blockages, past infections, genetic causes and hormonal disorders need diagnosis and often surgical or medical treatment. Three months of supplements only delays that.
The Sensible Sequence
- Get a semen analysis. Repeat it after a few weeks — results vary considerably between samples.
- Test vitamin D, and consider zinc status if your diet is limited.
- Fix heat, sleep, alcohol and smoking. These are free.
