Shigru Guggulu for Fibroids: Holistic Support for Women’s Health

Written by
Dr. Harsha Joy
Nangelil Ayurveda Medical College
I am Dr. Harsha Joy, and I mostly work with women who are struggling with stuff like hormonal issues, skin flare-ups, hair thinning, or fertility troubles that don't always have one straight answer. Over the years, I’ve realised that real healing doesn’t come from a standard protocol—it comes when you actually sit with a person, understand what their day looks like, how they eat sleep think feel. That’s where Ayurveda makes all the sense in the world to me. My clinical work revolves around women’s health—especially gynecology and infertility care. Many women who reach out to me have tried many things, felt confused or unheard. Whether it’s PCOS, irregular cycles, or just feeling "off" hormonally, I try to look at the root imbalance—agni, ama, ojas—basic Ayurvedic fundamentals that still explain modern conditions better than most charts or labels. Fertility support is something close to my heart... we don’t rush anything. It’s more like—let’s fix the ecosystem inside first. I also work with chronic skin and hair problems. Acne that just won't leave, hyperpigmentation, postpartum hair loss, oily scalp with dandruff... and again, for these too, it’s usually not a skin problem. It’s digestion, stress, sleep, circulation—internal stuff showing up outside. We work with diet tweaks, gut reset, herbs, maybe some lepas or sneha therapy—but always after tuning into what *your* body wants. Outside my clinic I write a lot. I'm part of content teams that simplify Ayurveda into understandable bits—whether it's about hormonal balance or skincare or daily routines. Writing has helped me reach people who aren’t ready to consult but want to start somewhere. And I think that matters too. I don’t believe in intense detoxes or piling on medicines. The work I do is slow, layered, sometimes messy—but that's healing. That’s what I try to offer—whether someone walks in with hair loss or years of failed fertility cycles. Every body has its own story and my job’s just to hear it right. Maybe guide it back home.

Introduction to Shigru Guggulu for Fibroids

Shigru Guggulu is an Ayurvedic formulation that combines the properties of Shigru (Moringa oleifera) and Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) to support women's reproductive health. Traditionally used to manage conditions like uterine fibroids, this herbal remedy aims to balance doshas, reduce inflammation, and regulate hormonal function, offering a natural approach to fibroid management.

Historical Roots & Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda has long recognized the importance of addressing uterine health through herbal formulations. Shigru (Moringa) is celebrated for its nourishing and blood-purifying properties, while Guggulu is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and tissue-regenerating effects. Classical Ayurvedic texts often describe formulations combining these ingredients to support the female reproductive system, dissolve abnormal growths, and restore balance to the body’s humors.

Key Components & Their Benefits for Fibroids

1. Shigru (Moringa oleifera)

  • Nutrient-Rich: High in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health.
  • Hormonal Balance: Helps regulate menstrual cycles and balance hormones, potentially reducing the growth of fibroids.
  • Anti-inflammatory & Detoxifying: Purifies the blood and reduces inflammation, which may help in managing fibroid-related symptoms.

2. Guggulu (Commiphora mukul)

  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation associated with fibroid growth and pelvic discomfort.
  • Tissue Regeneration: Supports the breakdown of abnormal tissue growth and promotes the regeneration of healthy tissue.
  • Detoxification: Helps eliminate toxins (Ama), improving systemic balance and potentially reducing fibroid size over time.

Therapeutic Benefits of Shigru Guggulu for Fibroids

  • Reduction in Fibroid Size: The synergistic effects of Shigru and Guggulu may help reduce the size of fibroids by targeting inflammation and balancing hormones.
  • Pain Relief: Anti-inflammatory properties can alleviate pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and discomfort associated with fibroids.
  • Hormonal Regulation: By supporting hormonal balance, Shigru Guggulu may regulate menstrual cycles and reduce symptoms like irregular bleeding.
  • Overall Uterine Health: The formulation nourishes the reproductive system, strengthens uterine tissues, and promotes detoxification, contributing to improved uterine function.

How Shigru Guggulu Works: The Ayurvedic Approach

Shigru Guggulu functions by balancing the doshas—primarily Vata and Kapha—associated with the development of fibroids. The combination of Shigru's nourishing qualities and Guggulu's potent purifying effects works to clear toxins, reduce abnormal tissue growth, and restore normal hormonal rhythms. This holistic approach not only addresses the physical presence of fibroids but also supports overall reproductive health and well-being.

Recommended Dosage & Usage Guidelines

  • Dosage: While specific dosage can vary based on individual health and practitioner recommendations, a common regimen might involve taking 1-2 capsules or the prescribed dose of Shigru Guggulu powder twice daily with warm water or herbal tea.
  • Duration: Consistent use over several months is often recommended for noticeable effects on fibroids, under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.
  • Administration: Follow personalized instructions from a healthcare professional to ensure safe and effective use.

Potential Side Effects & Precautions

  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be sensitive to ingredients; discontinue use if allergic reactions occur.
  • Consultation: Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider before starting Shigru Guggulu, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have underlying health conditions.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that the product is sourced from reputable suppliers to guarantee purity and authenticity.

Incorporating Shigru (Moringa) into your diet can be pretty simple and beneficial for hormonal balance! You could start by adding Moringa powder to smoothies or teas, or use it as a seasoning for soups and stews. It can also be taken in capsule form if that's easier for you. Just keep an eye on your dosha and digestive fire (agni) – if you feel overly warm or have digestive issues, it might be too much. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for tailor advice might help. ✌️

You might start by checking out Ayurvedic associations in your country, they often have lists of practitioners. Or you can look for local wellness centers that offer Ayurvedic services. Also, word of mouth from friends who’ve tried it could be helpful. Just make sure they have legit qualifications, like Ayurvedic doctor (BAMS) for more in-depth treatments.

For uterine health in Ayurveda, you might want to try Ashoka, which is great for managing discomfort and regulating cycles, or Lodhra, known for its balancing effects on female hormones.
