Ayurvedic Herbs With Their Great Benefits

Written by
Dr. Ayush Varma
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
I am an Ayurvedic physician with an MD from AIIMS—yeah, the 2008 batch. That time kinda shaped everything for me... learning at that level really forces you to think deeper, not just follow protocol. Now, with 15+ years in this field, I mostly work with chronic stuff—autoimmune issues, gut-related problems, metabolic syndrome... those complex cases where symptoms overlap n patients usually end up confused after years of going in circles. I don’t rush to treat symptoms—I try to dig into what’s actually causing the system to go off-track. I guess that’s where my training really helps, especially when blending classical Ayurveda with updated diagnostics. I did get certified in Panchakarma & Rasayana therapy, which I use quite a lot—especially in cases where tissue-level nourishment or deep detox is needed. Rasayana has this underrated role in post-illness recovery n immune stabilization, which most people miss. I’m pretty active in clinical research too—not a full-time academic or anything, but I’ve contributed to studies on how Ayurveda helps manage diabetes, immunity burnout, stress dysregulation, things like that. It’s been important for me to keep a foot in that evidence-based space—not just because of credibility but because it keeps me from becoming too rigid in practice. I also get invited to speak at wellness events n some integrative health conferences—sharing ideas around patient-centered treatment models or chronic care via Ayurvedic frameworks. I practice full-time at a wellness centre that’s serious about Ayurveda—not just the spa kind—but real, protocol-driven, yet personalised medicine. Most of my patients come to me after trying a lot of other options, which makes trust-building a huge part of what I do every single day.

Ayurveda, an ancient holistic healing system originating from India, has been using herbs for thousands of years to promote optimal health and well-being. Ayurvedic herbs are derived from nature and have been carefully selected and combined to address various health concerns. These herbs work in harmony with the body, mind, and spirit to restore balance and vitality. In this article, we will delve into the world of Ayurvedic herbs, exploring their healing properties, benefits, and how you can incorporate them into your daily routine for maximum wellness.

What is Ayurveda and how does it use herbs for healing?

Ayurveda, which translates to “the science of life” is a comprehensive system of medicine that focuses on achieving balance and harmony within the body. According to Ayurvedic principles, imbalances in the body’s three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – lead to disease and discomfort. Ayurvedic herbs are used to restore balance in these doshas and facilitate the body’s natural healing processes.

Ayurvedic herbs are carefully selected based on their unique properties and therapeutic benefits. These herbs are often used in combination to create powerful formulations that target specific health concerns.

Ayurvedic practitioners consider factors such as taste, energy, and post-digestive effect when prescribing herbs, ensuring a holistic approach to healing.

Benefits of Ayurvedic herbs for optimal health and well-being

Ayurveda’s medication comes from plants, seeds, and natural resources that grow naturally. It is not developed in laboratories and industries. Rather, it is cultivated with special care in farms and gardens. Every Ayurvedic medication is developed as per the guidelines of three books: Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Sangraha/Hridaya and other treatises

Of nearly 10,000 plants used for medicinal purposes in the Indian subcontinent, only 1,200 to 1,500 have been incorporated into the official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia in more than 3,000 years. All plants must be studied thoroughly before becoming part of the ayurvedic pharmacopoeia.

These medicinal plants offer a wide range of benefits for optimal health and well-being. These natural remedies are known for their ability to nourish and rejuvenate the body, strengthen the immune system, and promote longevity. Unlike conventional medicine, Ayurvedic herbs aim to address the root cause of the problem rather than just alleviate symptoms. This holistic approach ensures long-term health benefits and promotes overall well-being.

The healing properties of Ayurvedic herbs are vast and diverse. Some herbs are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation and pain in the body. Others have detoxifying effects, aiding in the elimination of toxins and promoting healthy digestion. Ayurvedic herbs also support mental health by reducing stress, and anxiety and promoting clarity of mind. These herbs have a profound impact on the body, mind, and spirit, harmonising the entire being for optimal health.
