Stomach discomfort after eating spicy foods can often be linked to an imbalance in your digestion or a sensitive digestive system. According to Ayurveda, this might be a sign of an aggravated ‘Pitta’ dosha, since spicy foods have qualities that increase heat and can irritate the stomach lining.

A straightforward approach is to reduce your intake of particularly spicy foods, if only for a short period of time. Observe how your body reacts; sometimes it’s enough to take a small break. Incorporating cooling and soothing foods like cucumbers, coconut water, and aloe vera juice can be beneficial. They counterbalance the heat generated by spicy foods and help calm your digestive system.

You might want to try having buttermilk with a pinch of cumin and rock salt after meals. This traditional Ayurvedic remedy helps to settle your stomach and offers digestive support. Aim to drink it once a day post-lunch or dinner.

Aloe vera juice can also be taken on an empty stomach in the morning, about 30ml once a day. It’s renowned for its soothing properties and can aid in reducing gastric irritation. However, be sure to check it’s pure and free of additives.

Herbs like coriander, fennel and cardamom are excellent to include in your meals. They’re gentle on the stomach and have a natural cooling effect that can balance the heat from spices. You could add these quite subtly to your foods or even prepare a tea by boiling them in water and sipping it warm.

Avoid eating late at night, as it can strain digestion and may worsen the discomfort if you’ve consumed something spicy. Focus on maintaining a regular eating pattern and give your body time to process food properly.

If the problem persists, consider a detoxifying Ayurvedic therapy such as Panchakarma, but only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Should your symptoms become severe or continue for a longer period it’s advisable to see a healthcare provider to rule out other conditions.
