Autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis require a thoughtful approach that aligns with individual needs. In Ayurveda, managing this involves balancing Vata dosha, which is often aggravated in such conditions, and enhancing Agni, the digestive fire, to promote better tissue health.

For diet, focus on warm and soothing foods. Encourage your husband to consume cooked meals that are easy to digest. Opt for boiled or steamed vegetables such as zucchini, carrots, and potatoes. Include grains like rice and quinoa, which are grounding and nourishing. Turmeric is particularly beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory properties; add it to his meals regularly. Ghee (clarified butter) is also recommended as it can lubricate joints and support digestion. However, avoid nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants as they might aggravate arthritis symptoms.

Warm herbal teas are beneficial, especially those made from ginger and turmeric, which can help to reduce inflammation. Limit the intake of cold, raw, or processed foods, as well as caffeine and alcohol, which can cause imbalance in Vata.

Regarding exercise, it’s essential to focus on low-impact activities that don’t put undue stress on the joints. Yoga is an excellent option, with asanas like gentle forward bends, twists, and restorative poses that can enhance flexibility and calm the mind. Tai Chi and swimming are also supportive as they promote movement without harsh impact.

Encourage regular practice of pranayama, such as Nadi Shodhana, to balance the breath and Vata energy. Consistency is key, so gentle daily exercise routine, perhaps 20-30 minutes, can make a significant difference. Always ensure he’s comfortable and never push beyond his limits. Consistency often brings lasting improvements, though it may take time to notice changes.

Lastly, consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider before making significant changes especially if he’s on medication to ensure it complements his current treatment.
