can we keep copper bottle in fridge - #38861

I am feeling a bit confused right now about my new copper bottle! I read somewhere that it's really good for your health, but I also heard that copper can react negatively with certain environments or materials. I usually keep my water bottle in the fridge to keep my water cold, especially in this heat!!! But now I’m wondering, can we keep copper bottle in fridge? I’ve noticed that my friends have different opinions; some say keeping it in the fridge is fine, while others warn that it might ruin the copper or something like that. I really don't want to mess up my new bottle. I just started using it last week, and wanted to make it last as long as possible. Also, I read that if you leave water in a copper bottle, it can help with digestion and stuff, but I’m not really sure about the logistics of it if it's kept in the fridge vs out at room temp. What’s the best way to store it, cause I love the bottle and I don’t want to waste it! Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks =D

Storing a copper bottle in the fridge can actually be detrimental to its longevity. Copper, by its nature, is a reactive metal, and sudden changes in temperature—as might occur frequently if you take the bottle in and out of the fridge—can lead to tarnishing and degradation. From an Ayurvedic perspective, copper is considered beneficial for health when used properly, as it helps balance the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and plays a role in maintaining healthy digestive fire, or agni.

Leaving water in a copper bottle overnight at room temperature allows oligodynamic action—copper’s ability to sterilize bacteria—to take place. By the morning, the copper-enriched water, often referred to as “tamra jal,” is considered to have enhanced health benefits. Consuming this water first thing in the morning can aid digestion and boost metabolism.

However, refrigerating the copper bottle could hinder this beneficial process. The cold temperature might slow down the reaction between the copper and the water, potentially affecting the health benefits you’re looking to achieve. Moreover, exposure to moisture and cold can lead to condensation, which might speed up the tarnishing of copper.

To optimize the benefits, it’s advisable to store your copper bottle at room temperature. Fill it up before bed and allow the water to sit overnight, consuming it in the morning. Clean the bottle regularly, ideally every other day, to prevent build-up and tarnish; using a mixture of salt and lemon or tamarind paste is effective.

Using your copper vessel mindfully and caring for it properly not only extends its lifespan but also enhances its health benefits. If maintaining cool water is a priority due to climate, perhaps consider using traditional mud pots, which naturally cool water without the risks associated with refrigerating copper.
