Coughs in kids, oh they can sure be tricky, especially when it nags 'em through the night. Poor little guy! Let’s see if we can untangle this a bit with some Ayurveda wisdom.
Sounds like it’s probably a kapha issue, with all that dampness and heaviness. Nighttime tends to aggravate it too, making bedtime not-so-fun. First off, let’s start with his diet. Avoid giving him heavy or cold foods, anything that’s too oily or dairy-heavy can also contribute to that mucusy feeling. Think warm, simple foods - rice, soups, and lightly steamed veggies can be calming.
Now, some star herbs that come to mind: Adrak (ginger) is pretty great for coughs. You can make a warm ginger tea by boiling pieces of fresh ginger in water, and letting it steep. A spoonful of this lukewarm tea with honey (make sure it’s real honey and not for kids under 1 though) can be soothing right before bedtime.
Tulsi (holy basil) leaves can also come handy. You can crush fresh leaves to extract juice and mix with honey, this combo can help pacify the cough. If fresh leaves are hard to come by, a little tulsi tea throughout the day will back up the effort.
While we’re talking about liquids, keeping your son hydrated with warm water can help thin the mucus. You might wanna try applying some warm oil like sesame or mustard oil to his chest and back before bed to provide some relief.
One more thing – think about his surroundings. Is the bedroom too dry or cold? Running a humidifier might help keep the air more comfortable for him to breathe through the night.
At the end, if his cough persists or worsens, it’s crucial to get medical attention. We have to prioritise health and well-being above all, sometimes these little ones need an extra check-up from time to time. Stay patient, you’re doin’ great!
