For a little one like your 1.5-year-old, it's not uncommon to go through phases of being more picky with food. This can be a bit challenging but incorporating Ayurvedic principles can gently help nudge her appetite in the right direction. It's important first to consider her dosha balance. Babies often display Kapha qualities which, if imbalanced, might cause sluggish digestion. To gently spark her agni, or digestive fire, try starting her day with a small dab of pure honey (not heated) combined with a pinch of ginger powder. After about 30 minutes, follow this with warm water. Honey should be used cautiously, and ginger should be in minimal amounts suitable for her age to avoid any aggravation. Involve her in mealtime rituals, inviting her to spot colors or shapes on her plate, making the food experience more engaging. Consider adding a tiny bit of hing (asafoetida) while cooking, a common Ayurvedic practice to boost digestion. Light soups made from moong dal or rice porridge with a bit of ghee can support healthy weight gain. Try giving her two to three small meals rather than larger ones–something like a banana or mashed sweet potato is quite balancing. Avoid heavy or fatty foods in the evening, which can dull her appetite. Including herbal teas made with cumin or fennel can be soothing for digestion. Keep them mild, given her young age. Small amounts of ajwain (carom seeds) infused water can also be beneficial for digestive help. Ensure she stays hydrated with water being the primary fluid, but avoid letting her fill up on milk right before meals, as it can suppress her hunger for solids. Encourage active play outdoors, which can also stimulate her appetite. It’s important to keep her regular doctor involved, especially if there's significant change or weight loss. Remember, her appetite will likely fluctuate, but small and consistent adjustments can gradually bring her back into balance.
