does ladies finger cause gas - #39650

Lucy

I am really frustrated and confused about this whole situation with ladies finger. A few weeks ago, I started eating more vegetables, hoping to improve my digestion, but I think I might've overdone it with ladies finger. My stomach has been feeling so bloated lately!!! Like, I didn't notice it at first, but after every meal that includes ladies finger, I get this really uncomfortable gas. 🙄 I read somewhere that ladies finger can cause gas, and now I'm wondering if that's true or if it’s just my stomach being weird. The other day I had a salad loaded with it, and OMG! I mean, I'm all for healthy eating, but this bloating thing is ruining my days! I'm also bloated after meals that don't have ladies finger, so maybe it's just me? Or could it really be about ladies finger? I could really use some help from the Ayurvedic doctors here. I love the taste and all but if ladies finger causes gas, do you think I should cut it out entirely? Or is there maybe a way to prepare it or combine it with other foods so it doesn't lead to this bloating? Ugh, I just wanna enjoy my meals without feeling like I’m about to explode! Any thoughts? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Yes, ladies finger, also known as okra or bhindi, can cause gas and bloating, especially if your digestive system is sensitive or if you’ve suddenly increased its consumption. According to Ayurvedic principles, okra has a cooling (shita) property and is a bit heavy (guru) to digest. It can increase kapha dosha, which could contribute to bloating and gas formation. But, don’t worry too much. There are a few ways you can enjoy ladies finger without discomfort.

Firstly, try cooking it with digestive spices that can help balance its properties. Spices like turmeric (haridra), cumin (jeera), and asafoetida (hing) are excellent choices. Asafoetida, in particular, has a great ability to alleviate gas and bloating. Before cooking the okra, consider stir-frying it in ghee with these spices to make it easier on your stomach and aid in digestion.

Also, it might be worth keeping an eye on the combinations of foods you eat with ladies finger. For instance, combining it with heavy, oily or very cold foods could exacerbate bloating. Since you’ve also felt bloated after meals without okra, the root cause might not just be ladies finger, but your agni (digestive fire) might be a bit weak or imbalanced. You could consider incorporating more warming foods and spices into your diet generally to strengthen digestion.

Importantly, eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than a few large ones can also help manage and improve your digestive symptoms. Remember, each individual’s constitution (prakriti) is unique, so it may require some experimentation to see what works best for you. If symptoms persist, you might wish to consult with a professional practitioner who can address your specific needs more closely.

All in all, try these suggestions and see how your body responds. Ladies finger doesn’t have to leave your diet entirely, but a balanced approach can help you enjoy it without the bloated feeling afterward.
