is besan good for kidney patients - #40332

Gabriella

I am really confused about what I should be eating lately. My doctor just told me that my kidneys are not functioning as great as they should, and I've been trying to figure out what foods I should avoid and what’s actually good for me. I heard people talking about besan and how it could be healthy, but I’m not entirely sure. Is besan good for kidney patients? The other day, I made some chickpea flour pancakes, using besan, and they were delish! But then I started thinking... Are chickpeas OK? I've been feeling a bit bloated and had some weird cravings for sweets too. Not to mention that my stomach feels a little upset here and there. I read something that said high-protein diets might not be good for kidneys, and then I wondered, isn’t besan high in protein? Also, do I have to worry about how much I consume? Like, is it one of those things that's okay in moderation, or should I just avoid it altogether? I want to make sure I’m doing everything right because I really don’t want to mess up my health.Anyways, if anyone has experience or advice on this, like is besan good or bad? Would really appreciate any insights! Thanks!!

When considering besan, or chickpea flour, for someone with kidney issues, there are several important factors to think about. Chickpeas, from which besan is made, are relatively high in protein and potassium. For kidney patients, regulating protein and potassium intake can be crucial; typically, high-protein foods may put strain on impaired kidneys.

Besan does contain a amount of protein, so moderation is key. If your healthcare professional has advised you to monitor protein intake, you need to be cautious about the quantity. It’s best to consult with a dietitian or healthcare provider to determine the accurate portion size based on your lab tests and kidney function.

Besan is also gluten-free, making it a good option for those with gluten sensitivities, but the potassium content should be monitored as well. If potassium levels in the blood are already high, you may need to limit or avoid high-potassium foods.

Feeling bloated or craving sweets might be linked to changes in your diet or other underlying issues. Ayurveda emphasizes maintaining a balanced digestive fire, or agni. If you’re experiencing regular stomach discomfort, it could indicate a need to balance your digestion, such as by consuming small meals and integrating spices like ginger or cumin, which facilitate digestion.

Including Amla (Indian gooseberry) in your diet can be beneficial, as it’s rich in Vitamin C and has a balancing effect on the digestion system. Always make dietary changes slowly and monitor your body’s response. If you’re unsure about any symptoms or changes, it’s advisable to reach out a medical professional promptly. Managing your diet attentively alongside medical advice can help maintain kidney health.

Besan, also known as chickpea flour, can be a nutritious option but it’s important to consider your specific kidney health situation. Your concerns about protein intake are quite valid, particularly when kidney function is compromised. Besan, being plant-derived, contains moderate protein levels, falling between 20-25% by weight. When kidney function is reduced, high protein might strain the kidneys as they work to filter waste from protein metabolism.

Given your experience of bloating and upset stomach, it seems there may be some imbalance in your digestive fire, or agni, possibly impacting vata dosha. Besan is considered heavy and might not digest comfortably if agni is weak, which is common with vata disturbances. It’s advisable to consume it in moderation and alongside spices like cumin, ajwain, or asafetida to aid digestion and mitigate vata imbalance.

Regarding portions, having chickpea flour in small, occasional servings can be okay, but it’s crucial to balance your overall diet to prevent overloading the kidneys. Discussions with a healthcare professional or a dietitian who understands your kidney function specifics would be necessary for personalized advice.

Also, listen to your body, as it’s showing subtle signals. Introduce alternatives rich in fiber but lower in protein, like certain vegetables and fruits, according to your individual tolerance. Stay hydrated, which helps in effective kidney function and manage cravings naturally without overindulging in potentially harmful high-sugar foods.

While besan might contribute positively within a balanced dietary framework, really follow professional guidance for optimal kidney health. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention to review your dietary plan and ensure it supports your ongoing health journey.
