Audumbaravleha – Ayurvedic Remedy for Digestive and Respiratory Health

Written by
Dr. Harsha Joy

I am Dr. Harsha Joy, and I mostly work with women who are struggling with stuff like hormonal issues, skin flare-ups, hair thinning, or fertility troubles that don't always have one straight answer. Over the years, I’ve realised that real healing doesn’t come from a standard protocol—it comes when you actually sit with a person, understand what their day looks like, how they eat sleep think feel. That’s where Ayurveda makes all the sense in the world to me. My clinical work revolves around women’s health—especially gynecology and infertility care. Many women who reach out to me have tried many things, felt confused or unheard. Whether it’s PCOS, irregular cycles, or just feeling "off" hormonally, I try to look at the root imbalance—agni, ama, ojas—basic Ayurvedic fundamentals that still explain modern conditions better than most charts or labels. Fertility support is something close to my heart... we don’t rush anything. It’s more like—let’s fix the ecosystem inside first. I also work with chronic skin and hair problems. Acne that just won't leave, hyperpigmentation, postpartum hair loss, oily scalp with dandruff... and again, for these too, it’s usually not a skin problem. It’s digestion, stress, sleep, circulation—internal stuff showing up outside. We work with diet tweaks, gut reset, herbs, maybe some lepas or sneha therapy—but always after tuning into what *your* body wants. Outside my clinic I write a lot. I'm part of content teams that simplify Ayurveda into understandable bits—whether it's about hormonal balance or skincare or daily routines. Writing has helped me reach people who aren’t ready to consult but want to start somewhere. And I think that matters too. I don’t believe in intense detoxes or piling on medicines. The work I do is slow, layered, sometimes messy—but that's healing. That’s what I try to offer—whether someone walks in with hair loss or years of failed fertility cycles. Every body has its own story and my job’s just to hear it right. Maybe guide it back home.

Introduction to Audumbaravleha

Audumbaravleha is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation known for its ability to balance the body's doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta, and is widely used to support digestive health, respiratory function, and overall vitality. This herbal formulation contains a variety of potent ingredients that are specifically chosen for their anti-inflammatory, digestive, and rejuvenating properties. Audumbaravleha is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat conditions such as indigestion, constipation, respiratory issues, and even as a general tonic to boost energy and immunity.

Historical Roots & Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, Audumbaravleha has been used for centuries to treat digestive and respiratory ailments. The formulation is named after the Audumbar tree (Ficus glomerata), whose fruit is known for its therapeutic properties. The inclusion of this powerful herb, along with others, creates a synergistic effect that enhances digestion, clears toxins, and promotes overall health. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe Audumbaravleha as a Rasayana (rejuvenating tonic) and an effective remedy for a wide variety of health conditions, particularly those related to the digestive and respiratory systems.

Key Components & Therapeutic Benefits

1. Herbal Composition

Audumbaravleha is made from a blend of herbs, each selected for its unique properties. Some key ingredients include:

  • Audumbar (Ficus glomerata): The primary ingredient in Audumbaravleha, known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.
  • Pippali (Piper longum): Supports respiratory health, enhances digestion, and facilitates the absorption of other herbs.
  • Triphala: A combination of three fruits—AmalakiHaritaki, and Bibhitaki—known for their detoxifying, rejuvenating, and digestive-supporting properties.
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Known for its digestive stimulant effects, ginger helps relieve nausea, improve appetite, and reduce bloating.
  • Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum): An antimicrobial and immune-boosting herb that helps in reducing inflammation and supporting respiratory health.

2. Digestive Health & Detoxification

One of the primary benefits of Audumbaravleha is its ability to support digestion and promote the elimination of toxins from the body. The formulation stimulates digestive enzymes, which enhances the breakdown and absorption of food. The combined effects of TriphalaAmla, and Ginger help improve the functioning of the digestive system, relieve constipation, reduce bloating, and ease indigestion. Furthermore, Audumbar helps cleanse the digestive tract, clearing Ama (toxins) and supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes.

3. Respiratory Health & Cough Relief

Audumbaravleha is also beneficial for improving respiratory health. It helps clear the respiratory passages by reducing inflammation and supporting better airflow. The presence of PippaliTulsi, and Ginger enhances the expectorant properties of the formulation, helping to loosen and expel mucus. This makes it effective in treating respiratory conditions like cough, bronchitis, and asthma. The anti-inflammatory properties of these herbs also help reduce swelling and irritation in the airways, providing relief from symptoms associated with respiratory issues.

4. Immune Boosting & Rejuvenation

Audumbaravleha acts as a Rasayana, promoting overall health and vitality. The combination of Amla and Tulsi boosts the immune system, making the body more resilient against infections and illnesses. The antioxidants in Amla help neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and promoting the healthy functioning of all body systems. Regular use of Audumbaravleha can improve energy levels, rejuvenate the body, and promote long-term health.

5. Anti-inflammatory & Pain Relief

The anti-inflammatory effects of Audumbar and Ginger help relieve joint pain and inflammation. This makes Audumbaravleha useful for managing conditions like arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. By soothing internal inflammation, it reduces pain and promotes better mobility, especially in individuals suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions.

How Audumbaravleha Works: The Science Behind the Remedy

The therapeutic effects of Audumbaravleha can be attributed to the synergistic actions of its herbal ingredients. Audumbar has significant anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce digestive and respiratory tract inflammation, while Triphala aids in the detoxification process by clearing the gastrointestinal system of toxins. The antioxidants in Amla protect the body from oxidative damage, and Pippali enhances the absorption of nutrients. Together, these ingredients work to restore balance to the body, boost immunity, support digestion, and improve respiratory function.

Choosing the Right Ayurvedic Remedies & Guidance

When selecting Audumbaravleha, consider the following:

  • Consult Certified Ayurvedic Practitioners: Personalized guidance ensures that the formulation is suitable for your body constitution (Prakriti) and specific health needs.
  • Ensure High-Quality Herbs: Choose products made from organic, high-quality ingredients to ensure maximum potency and safety.
