Naladadi Ghritam – Ayurvedic Remedy for ADHD, Aphasia, and Cognitive Health

Written by

I am Dr. Harsha Joy, and I mostly work with women who are struggling with stuff like hormonal issues, skin flare-ups, hair thinning, or fertility troubles that don't always have one straight answer. Over the years, I’ve realised that real healing doesn’t come from a standard protocol—it comes when you actually sit with a person, understand what their day looks like, how they eat sleep think feel. That’s where Ayurveda makes all the sense in the world to me. My clinical work revolves around women’s health—especially gynecology and infertility care. Many women who reach out to me have tried many things, felt confused or unheard. Whether it’s PCOS, irregular cycles, or just feeling "off" hormonally, I try to look at the root imbalance—agni, ama, ojas—basic Ayurvedic fundamentals that still explain modern conditions better than most charts or labels. Fertility support is something close to my heart... we don’t rush anything. It’s more like—let’s fix the ecosystem inside first. I also work with chronic skin and hair problems. Acne that just won't leave, hyperpigmentation, postpartum hair loss, oily scalp with dandruff... and again, for these too, it’s usually not a skin problem. It’s digestion, stress, sleep, circulation—internal stuff showing up outside. We work with diet tweaks, gut reset, herbs, maybe some lepas or sneha therapy—but always after tuning into what *your* body wants. Outside my clinic I write a lot. I'm part of content teams that simplify Ayurveda into understandable bits—whether it's about hormonal balance or skincare or daily routines. Writing has helped me reach people who aren’t ready to consult but want to start somewhere. And I think that matters too. I don’t believe in intense detoxes or piling on medicines. The work I do is slow, layered, sometimes messy—but that's healing. That’s what I try to offer—whether someone walks in with hair loss or years of failed fertility cycles. Every body has its own story and my job’s just to hear it right. Maybe guide it back home.

Introduction to Naladadi Ghritam

Naladadi Ghritam is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation known for its beneficial effects on cognitive health, particularly in conditions like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and aphasia. This potent herbal ghee is used to improve cognitive skills, enhance memory, and promote better mental functions. Composed of various beneficial herbs and ghee, Naladadi Ghritam works by nourishing the brain and nervous system, balancing the doshas, and supporting mental clarity and focus. It is frequently recommended as part of holistic treatment plans for children and adults suffering from cognitive impairments and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Historical Roots & Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, ghritams (clarified butter-based formulations) have been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, especially those related to the mind and cognitive functions. Naladadi Ghritam is made from a combination of herbs that are considered to have medhya (intellect-enhancing) properties. The use of ghee as a base is significant, as it is believed to enhance the absorption of the medicinal properties of the herbs and nourish the brain tissue. This formulation has long been used in Ayurvedic practice to improve memory, concentration, and cognitive function, especially in cases of mental sluggishness, speech disorders, and neurodevelopmental issues.

Key Ingredients & Therapeutic Benefits

1. Herbal Composition

Naladadi Ghritam is composed of a blend of powerful herbs, each contributing to its overall cognitive benefits:

  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Known for its ability to enhance memory, concentration, and mental clarity. Brahmi is often regarded as one of the most important herbs for brain health in Ayurveda.
  • Vacha (Acorus calamus): This herb is used to enhance cognitive function and improve speech. It is particularly effective for treating aphasia and dysphasia.
  • Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis): Known for its calming effects on the mind, Shankhpushpi improves mental performance, reduces stress, and aids in managing ADHD symptoms.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): An adaptogen that helps reduce stress, promote emotional well-being, and improve overall brain function.
  • Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Known for boosting immunity, Guduchi also supports brain health and mental clarity.

These herbs work synergistically to enhance cognitive abilities, improve concentration, reduce mental fatigue, and promote speech development in individuals with aphasia or dysphasia.

2. Enhancing Cognitive Skills and Mental Functions

Naladadi Ghritam is particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with cognitive disorders like ADHD, aphasia, and general mental sluggishness. The herbs in this formulation help improve focus, memory, and clarity by nourishing the brain and balancing the doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta, which are associated with mental energy and clarity. This makes it an ideal choice for enhancing higher mental functions, such as problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.

3. Supporting Speech Development (Aphasia/Dysphasia)

Aphasia and dysphasia are conditions where speech and language abilities are impaired due to damage in the brain. Naladadi Ghritam, with its potent ingredients like Vacha and Brahmi, is known to support the recovery and improvement of speech and language skills. By stimulating brain function and improving neural communication, it can aid individuals in recovering their ability to speak and form coherent sentences.

4. ADHD Management

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Naladadi Ghritam’s ability to balance the nervous system and improve focus makes it a valuable remedy for ADHD. Herbs like Shankhpushpi help calm the mind and improve concentration, reducing hyperactive tendencies and impulsive behavior.

How Naladadi Ghritam Works: The Science Behind the Remedy

The primary action of Naladadi Ghritam is to nourish the brain and enhance cognitive functions. The herbs used in the formulation have neuroprotective, neurotropic, and cognitive-enhancing effects that support the brain's ability to process information, store memories, and communicate effectively. The ghee in which the herbs are infused acts as a carrier for the medicinal properties, ensuring they reach the brain tissues efficiently. The calming properties of ingredients like Ashwagandha and Shankhpushpi help reduce stress and anxiety, while the memory-enhancing herbs like Brahmi and Vacha promote clarity and mental focus.

Recommended Dosage & How to Use Naladadi Ghritam

The dosage of Naladadi Ghritam can vary based on individual health conditions and should ideally be determined by an Ayurvedic practitioner. Typically, the general dosage guidelines are:

  1. For Adults: 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml) of Naladadi Ghritam, taken once or twice daily with warm water or milk.
  2. For Children (under guidance): A smaller dose, typically 1 teaspoon (5 ml) once a day.
  3. For ADHD or Cognitive Improvement: Regular use for a period of 1-3 months is recommended for visible improvement.
  4. For Aphasia/Dysphasia: It is suggested to be used consistently to support speech and cognitive development under professional supervision.

It is essential to follow the advice of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor the dosage based on the specific needs of the individual.

Potential Side Effects & Precautions

Naladadi Ghritam is generally considered safe when used as recommended. However, it is important to consider the following:

  • Digestive Discomfort: Some individuals may experience mild digestive upset when taking ghee-based formulations. If this occurs, reduce the dosage or take it with warm milk.
  • Pregnancy & Nursing: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before using Naladadi Ghritam.
