Psychological Illnesses

Written by
Dr. Ayush Varma
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
I am an Ayurvedic physician with an MD from AIIMS—yeah, the 2008 batch. That time kinda shaped everything for me... learning at that level really forces you to think deeper, not just follow protocol. Now, with 15+ years in this field, I mostly work with chronic stuff—autoimmune issues, gut-related problems, metabolic syndrome... those complex cases where symptoms overlap n patients usually end up confused after years of going in circles. I don’t rush to treat symptoms—I try to dig into what’s actually causing the system to go off-track. I guess that’s where my training really helps, especially when blending classical Ayurveda with updated diagnostics. I did get certified in Panchakarma & Rasayana therapy, which I use quite a lot—especially in cases where tissue-level nourishment or deep detox is needed. Rasayana has this underrated role in post-illness recovery n immune stabilization, which most people miss. I’m pretty active in clinical research too—not a full-time academic or anything, but I’ve contributed to studies on how Ayurveda helps manage diabetes, immunity burnout, stress dysregulation, things like that. It’s been important for me to keep a foot in that evidence-based space—not just because of credibility but because it keeps me from becoming too rigid in practice. I also get invited to speak at wellness events n some integrative health conferences—sharing ideas around patient-centered treatment models or chronic care via Ayurvedic frameworks. I practice full-time at a wellness centre that’s serious about Ayurveda—not just the spa kind—but real, protocol-driven, yet personalised medicine. Most of my patients come to me after trying a lot of other options, which makes trust-building a huge part of what I do every single day.

Mindfulness and meditation are great tools! To tackle subconscious fears, start with grounding practices - focus on your breath and notice your body's sensations. This helps build self-awareness, helping you recognize fears when they pop up. Practice regularly, it can totally change how you react to fear, and over time, lessen its grip on you.

To promote mental balance, try anchoring your daily routine with calm and consistency. Morning meditation, gentle yoga, or even short breathing practices can really balance the doshas, calm the mind and improve agni. Also, eating fresh, sattvic foods and keeping a regular sleep schedule could make a huge difference. Don't forget to find a little time for yourself, connect with nature or journaling can also help.

To manage stress and anxiety with Ayurveda, start by knowing your dosha type (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) as a lot depends on that. For instance, Vata imbalances can increase anxiety. Incorporate herbs like Ashwagandha & Brahmi, which are known for calming effects, into your routine. Practicing yoga, meditation, and a nourishing diet also helps. Keep in touch with an Ayurvedic doc for tailored advice.

Dr. Ayush Varma

Managing emotions like jealousy and anger can be tricky, but in Ayurveda, we try to balance those intense Rajas and Tamas doshas. Some practical tips could be practicing deep breathing or meditation to cool down that fire, and munching on sweet, astringent, and bitter foods. Try using herbs like Brahmi or Ashwagandha too, they'll help find some inner calm. Reconnecting with nature or doing mindful activities like yoga can also ground you. Regular check-ins with an Ayurvedic practitioner can help balance your emotions' flow too. Remember, we're all human and it's okay to have these feelings now and then!
What are some practical tips to manage raja and tama doshas in daily life?

To manage raja and tama doshas, try to include more satvik practices in your routine. Meditate regularly to balance raja, bringing calmness and clarity. Getting enough restful sleep can help reduce tama's dullness. Consuming fresh, simple foods improves digestion and mental clarity too! Yoga and pranayama might also be really helpful. 🙂
