Liver & Gall

Written by
Dr. Harsha Joy
Nangelil Ayurveda Medical College
I am Dr. Harsha Joy, and I mostly work with women who are struggling with stuff like hormonal issues, skin flare-ups, hair thinning, or fertility troubles that don't always have one straight answer. Over the years, I’ve realised that real healing doesn’t come from a standard protocol—it comes when you actually sit with a person, understand what their day looks like, how they eat sleep think feel. That’s where Ayurveda makes all the sense in the world to me. My clinical work revolves around women’s health—especially gynecology and infertility care. Many women who reach out to me have tried many things, felt confused or unheard. Whether it’s PCOS, irregular cycles, or just feeling "off" hormonally, I try to look at the root imbalance—agni, ama, ojas—basic Ayurvedic fundamentals that still explain modern conditions better than most charts or labels. Fertility support is something close to my heart... we don’t rush anything. It’s more like—let’s fix the ecosystem inside first. I also work with chronic skin and hair problems. Acne that just won't leave, hyperpigmentation, postpartum hair loss, oily scalp with dandruff... and again, for these too, it’s usually not a skin problem. It’s digestion, stress, sleep, circulation—internal stuff showing up outside. We work with diet tweaks, gut reset, herbs, maybe some lepas or sneha therapy—but always after tuning into what *your* body wants. Outside my clinic I write a lot. I'm part of content teams that simplify Ayurveda into understandable bits—whether it's about hormonal balance or skincare or daily routines. Writing has helped me reach people who aren’t ready to consult but want to start somewhere. And I think that matters too. I don’t believe in intense detoxes or piling on medicines. The work I do is slow, layered, sometimes messy—but that's healing. That’s what I try to offer—whether someone walks in with hair loss or years of failed fertility cycles. Every body has its own story and my job’s just to hear it right. Maybe guide it back home.

Ayurvedic healing for liver and gall

The liver is closely linked to other organs and body systems.  The liver is  the main organ of detoxification and  plays a crucial role in the digestion of food and nutrition .

Ayurveda provides an insight into these relationships, which helps to better understand the body’s support for the liver.  The digestive process divides food into its 5 basic forms – or the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) that the body uses to exist.

How will an Ayurvedic doctor work with you in an online session?

In Ayurveda, the liver works under the Pitta dosha – and is described as a fiery, hot organ, most directly related to the Agni  – a sacred metabolic fire inside. This fact indicates a close relationship between the liver, Agni (fire principle), pitta dosha, and energy exchange.

According to Ayurveda, substances and energies converge in the liver and affect their vitality and function.  Ayurvedic treatment first begins with the pacification of the Pitta, followed by detoxification and cleansing therapies – continuing with the restoration and healing of the body using various Ayurvedic methods prescribed by an Ayurvedic doctor.

Ayurvedic recommendations for health of liver and gall:

Healthy expressions of Pitta – willpower, courage, confidence, satisfaction, enthusiasm, cooperation, acceptance

  • Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning kindles and protects Agni and helps to clear the digestive tract of ama (toxins)
  • diet has a profound effect on liver health – a balanced diet,
  • products that specifically strengthen and support the liver – cabbage, beet greens, collard greens, dandelion greens, nettle and deciduous leaves, also useful green vegetables, which are rich in chlorophyll, as well as beets, carrots, and apples,
  • Organic sesame oil, olive oil, and avocado oil can help rejuvenate the liver,
  • Meditation, Pranayama, and Yoga

To support liver health with Ayurveda, you could focus on eating foods that balance the Pitta dosha, which affects the liver. Embrace cooling and light foods like cucumbers and leafy greens. Avoid excessive spicy, oily or fried foods as they can irritate the liver. Drink warm water with lemon, and you might try some turmeric tea too.

You can easily add turmeric to your diet by mixing it into smoothies, soups, or even in your morning tea or milk (like golden milk). As for milk thistle, you can try taking it as a tea or a supplement. Just remember the balance of your doshas – if you’re uncertain, it's good to consult an Ayurveda practitioner!

For better liver health, Ayurveda recommends eating cooling and detoxifying foods, like green leafy veggies and bitter herbs such as neem. Avoid heavy, oily foods and too much alcohol as they can affect liver function. Adding spices like turmeric and ginger may support liver health. Always consider your unique dosha (body type) before making changes.
