can we eat curd in pregnancy - #25672

Audrey

I am worried about my diet during pregnancy, especially when it comes to dairy. I’ve always loved eating curd, but I've heard mixed things lately. Some friends are saying I should totally stay away from it, while others insist it's super healthy. I’ve always had this routine of eating curd with my meals, and I feel like it does good things for my digestion, you know? Just the other day, I felt a bit bloated after lunch and I thought maybe cutting down on curd could help. But then again, I read that curd can be a great source of calcium and protein, which is obviously important while pregnant. Ugh, I need clarity! Can we eat curd in pregnancy? Is it good, or should I be cautious? Like, are there any specific types I should stick to or avoid? I would just love to hear your expert opinions on this whole can we eat curd in pregnancy debate. Thanks!

Yes, you can eat curd during pregnancy, and it can actually be quite beneficial. In Ayurveda, curd is seen as a good source of calcium and protein, both of which are crucial during pregnancy for the development of the baby. It also aids in digestion and helps maintain gut health, thanks to its probiotic nature. However, there are some guidelines to keep in mind to ensure you’re getting the most benefits without any downsides.

First off, ensure that the curd is homemade or from a trustworthy source to avoid harmful bacteria. It’s always best to consume fresh curd, preferably made from whole milk. Curd should be well-formed and not too sour, as excessive sourness can aggravate pitta dosha, which isn’t ideal during pregnancy.

It’s also important when you consume curd. Eating it during the day, especially at lunch, is recommended because it helps improve digestion and balances digestive fire. Avoid eating curd at night as it might lead to phlegm accumulation, which can be uncomfortable and sometimes lead to colds or congestion. If you ever feel bloated or discomfort, it’s a good idea to pair curd with a pinch of rock salt and roasted cumin seeds for better digestion.

Consider your prakriti (body constitution) and dosha balance. For instance, if you’re predominantly kapha, consuming curd sparingly is advisable because kapha individuals might increase mucus production.

Finally, listen to your body. If you see any adverse effects, you might want to reduce the amount you consume or consult a healthcare professional. Complement your curd intake with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other sources of protein to meet your nutritional needs during this crucial time. And as always during pregnancy, it’s wise to discuss dietary changes with your primary healthcare provider for tailored advice.
