Aloe vera, particularly its latex, is known in Ayurveda for its laxative properties, but it should be used with caution. Aloe latex contains compounds called anthraquinones, which stimulate bowel movements. For constipation, traditional Ayurveda sometimes recommends Aloe barbadensis miller, which contains such bioactive compounds. You might try Aloe vera juice, but it’s crucial to be cautious with doses and duration.

Start with a small amount, around 20-50 ml of fresh Aloe vera juice, preferably on an empty stomach in the morning. You can mix it with water if the taste is too strong. Drinking this for a few days might help activate bowel movement. Remember, taking aloe vera for too long, or in large quantity can potentially cause side effects like diarrhea or abdominal cramps.

It’s vital to address the underlying cause of constipation. Evaluate your diet, ensuring plenty of fiber from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and regular hydration—at least 8-10 glasses of water per day. Practicing yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana and Baddha Konasana can naturally support better digestion and bowel movement.

Remember too, that your Prakriti, or body constitution, plays a significant role. If you have a Vata dominant constitution, focusing on grounding, warming foods and herbs like Triphala could be more effective for regular digestion. In any persistent cases or if constipation is severe, consulting with a healthcare professional for a tailored approach is recommended. Avoid using aloe latex if pregnant, breastfeeding, or having kidney issues. Consider avoiding it if there are pre-existing digestive conditions, without professional guidance.

Be cautious and listen to how your body responds — if discomfort or unusual symptoms occur, it is best to discontinue use and seek medical consultation.
