Classical Ayurvedic Formulations (Aushadhni) In clinical practice, a combination of herbo-mineral preparations is traditionally used to pacify Kapha, relax the bronchioles, and ease breathing. Primary Herbo-Mineral Compounds ••Sitopaladi Churna / Talisadi Churna: Excellent for pacifying Kasa. If there is excessive, thick phlegm, Talisadi is often preferred as it is slightly warmer. ••Shwas Khas Chintamani Ras / Shwas Kuthar Ras: Potent classical Ras Aushadhis specifically indicated for acute respiratory distress, acting as swift bronchodilators. ••Abhrak Bhasma (Shatputi): Acts as a powerful Rasayana for the Pranavaha Srotas, improving lung tissue strength and cellular oxygenation. ••Praval Pishti / Godanti Bhasma: Helps reduce inflammation and balances any associated Pitta (such as a burning sensation or low-grade fever). Asava & Arishta (Liquid Formulations) ••Kanakasava: Contains Dhatura, which acts as a natural bronchodilator. Dosage: 15–20 ml with an equal quantity of lukewarm water, taken after meals. ••Vasarishta / Vasavaleha: Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) is the premier herb for respiratory disorders (Vasa Kasa-haranam Srestham). It liquefies thick mucus and relieves spasms. 2. Immediate Home-Based Interventions To soothe the Pranavaha Srotas and ease the continuous daytime coughing immediately: ••Steam Inhalation (Dhoomapana/Vapour): Inhale steam infused with a few drops of Eucalyptus oil or a pinch of Ajwain (Carom seeds). This helps dilate the airways and loosen trapped Kapha. ••Warm Herbal Decoction: Drink a hot infusion of Tulsi (Holy Basil), Ginger, Black Pepper (Maricha), and Mulethi (Liquorice) sweetened with a small amount of honey. Note: Honey should only be added once the tea has cooled down to lukewarm, as Ayurveda strictly prohibits heating honey. ••Kantakari Avaleha: Taking 1 teaspoon of this jam-like formulation twice a day provides excellent relief from continuous coughing. 3. Dietary Guidelines (Ahara & Vihara) When Pranavaha Srotas is compromised, the digestive fire (Agni) is often low, leading to Ama (toxins) formation which further blocks the channels. ••Strictly Avoid: Cold water, curd, ice creams, deep-fried foods, heavy dairy, and bananas. These are highly Abhishyandi (clogging) and instantly increase Kapha. ••Favor: Lukewarm water for drinking throughout the day, light soups (like moong dal or vegetable soup spiced with ginger and cumin), and freshly prepared, warm meals
