Eczema, often sensitive to weather changes and dietary habits, can indeed, be a challenging condition. From an Ayurvedic perspective, eczema often arises due to imbalances in the body’s doshas, primarily pitta and vata. Let’s consider some steps to help you manage this effectively.

First, focus on your diet. Given your eczema flares, it’s crucial to pacify the pitta dosha. Start by reducing spicy, sour, and salty foods. Instead, favor cooling, calming foods like cucumbers, melons, and leafy greens. If possible, avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol, as they tend to exacerbate pitta. Introduce more ghee into your meals; it’s soothing and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Hydration’s essential too. Keep yourself well-hydrated to support the skin. Coconut water is great, it’s cooling and naturally sweet. Turmeric milk at night can be beneficial for its anti-inflammatory and skin-boosing properties. Simply add a pinch of turmeric to warm milk, but remember, if you’re lactose intolerant, use plant-based milk.

Lifestyle adjustments are equally important. Aim to maintain a regular sleep schedule—poor sleep can aggravate vata. If stress is a factor, consider incorporating meditation or yoga into your daily routine—they’re excellent for calming the mind and reducing stress, therefore aiding in keeping vata balanced.

Topically, you can try applying coconut oil or aloe vera gel to soothe itching and inflammation. Neem oil is another option, it’s a classical remedy known for its powerful antibacterial and healing properties on the skin.

When it comes to weather changes, be mindful of sudden temperature shifts. Keeping your skin moisturized, particularly, with natural, unscented moisturisers, can help protect the skin barrier. In case of extreme changes, wearing breathable cotton clothing, to prevent skin irritation, is wise.

As eczema has increased with age, you might want to observe any specific triggers associated with the Nairobi environment. It’s also valuable to consult with health professionals locally, who might have further insights into specific regional factors contributing to your eczema.

Remember, with persistent skin conditions, if symptoms worsen or don’t improve with lifestyle adjustments, seek consultation with a healthcare professional, possibly considering both contemporary medical approaches and Ayurveda for a comprehensive management strategy.
