At 12, your daughter is likely in pre-puberty or early puberty, and hair loss can be influenced by multiple factors—hormonal shifts, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or even scalp infections.

Common Causes of Sudden Hair Fall at Her Age

*Nutritional Deficiencies: Especially iron, vitamin D, B12, zinc, and protein—common in vegetarian diets.

*Hormonal Changes: Approaching puberty, fluctuating estrogen can affect hair health.

*Stress or Emotional Upset.

*Recent Illness or Fever. *Fungal infections or dandruff can worsen hair fa2. Blood Tests to Consider Consult pediatrician or do blood test and share reports - CBC Iron studies (Serum ferritin, TIBC) Vitamin D Vitamin B12 Thyroid function test (TSH, T3, T4)

When it comes to hair fall in young girls, especially before the onset of menarche, it’s important to consider changes in balance of hormones as a likely factor. The stress of expectation about her periods, general stress or nutritional imbalances can also play a role here. Since your daughter’s diet is vegetarian, ensuring she gets enough iron and proteins is crucial, as these are vital for hair health.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, hair fall can be related to an imbalance in the doshas, particularly an increase in Pitta or Vata dosha. This can be exacerbated, for instance, by a diet that is heavy in spicy, sour, or processed foods, or a lifestyle that involves stress or lack of proper rest. Chocolate and soda might also contribute to Pitta and Vata imbalances.

Consider adding more locally sourced fruits and leafy greens, such as spinach, beetroot, and carrots, are rich in iron and essential nutrients. Ensure she’s consuming adequate proteins like lentils, chickpeas, and tofu to support tissue growth, especially for hair and nails. If dairy suits her, add some yogurt or buttermilk daily, which can balance aggravated Pitta. Also, increasing intake of almonds and walnuts can boost omega-3 fatty acids which are good for hair.

For external care, consider massaging her scalp gently with warm oil - coconut or sesame oil infused with a few hibiscus leaves can help nourish the hair roots. This should be done twice a week, leaving the oil for around an hour before washing.

Maintaining a routine of good sleep, leisure, and mild physical activities like yoga or simple exercises can regulate her stress levels and help stabilize body’s internal systems. Avoid over-scheduling her day with too many activities.

However if the hair loss continues or gets worse, or if she experiences any other symptoms, it it vital that you consult with a healthcare professional to rule out conditions like thyroid imbalances or other nutritional deficiencies.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
