how to use indigo powder - #23601

Alexander

I am really confused about how to use indigo powder for my hair. I’ve been trying to go natural and avoid chemical dyes, but I’m not getting the results I want. I’ve read a lot about it, and some people say it's great for achieving darker shades, but I’m worried about messing it up! Last week, I tried mixing indigo powder with water and applying it right after henna, but my hair ended up looking greenish instead of the dark brown I was going for! 😩 I let it sit for, like, an hour, which I thought was enough. Then I just rinsed it out. Do I need to do something different? Maybe I left it on too long or didn’t prep my hair the right way? Would using indigo powder before henna give me a better result? I need a little guidance, can you guys help me out? What’s the best way to use indigo powder without going through another hair experiment fail? Plus, I have fine hair, does that affect how to use indigo powder too? Thanks!!

Using indigo powder for hair coloring can be a bit tricky but with proper technique, you can achieve the darker shades that you’re aiming for. The key to using indigo effectively is understanding how it works in combination with henna. Indigo powder works best when applied immediately after a henna treatment. The traditional process involves a two-step application for achieving deep brown and black shades.

First, make sure you’ve applied pure henna to your hair and let it sit for at least 3-4 hours. Henna must be allowed to develop on your hair so it binds to the hair shaft properly. After rinsing out henna, you can move on to the indigo step.

Prepare your indigo powder by mixing it with warm (not hot) water, until you achieve a yogurt-like consistency. It’s best to let the indigo paste sit for about 10-15 minutes before applying to your hair; this allows the dye to release properly. Apply the indigo immediately after your rinse out henna, covering every strand thoroughly.

Given you have fine hair, your application method and timing may vary slightly for optimal results. Your hair’s fine texture could absorb the color a bit differently, this means you might not require it to sit for the full 1-2 hours typically needed for thicker hair textures. Maybe start with leaving it on for 45 minutes to 1 hour initially.

Remember to keep your hair warm and covered during the treatment—use a shower cap—that can help intensify the color uptake. Rinse out the indigo with just water avoiding shampooing for the next 2-3 days to let the color fully develop.

Applying indigo before henna won’t likely give you the desired result; henna is the base layer that provides rich undertones, thus it’s essential to do it in the proper sequence. Patience is key here, and with a bit of practice, you’ll find the method that works best for you!
