I am really confused about using mustard oil for my hair lately. A friend of mine recommended it after noticing how dry and frizzy my hair has gotten, especially after a couple of summers. I mean, I’ve tried so many things, you know? Conditioners, masks, you name it! Nothing works. My hair feels dull, and I keep hoping to find something that can help. I heard that mustard oil can be like a miracle for this kind of problem! But, can we apply mustard oil on hair without mixing it with something else, or is it too heavy? Like, will it just make my hair feel greasy? Also, I’ve read mixed things about its smell! Do you guys have tips on how to get rid of that strong smell if I do use it?? I am thinking of trying it soon since summer is approaching again, and I really just want to boost the shine and make it healthier. Using mustard oil on your hair can indeed be beneficial, especially if you’re experiencing dryness and frizz. In Ayurvedic practice, mustard oil is known for its warming properties, and it’s praised for promoting hair growth and adding luster to dull strands. You can certainly apply mustard oil directly to your hair without mixing it with other oils. Though it’s slightly heavy, its richness can help lock in moisture and improve the overall health of your hair.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, as mustard oil is quite thick, it can feel greasy if used in excess. So, it’s usually enough to apply a small amount — about a tablespoon (depending on the length and thickness of your hair) can be a good start. Warm the oil slightly before application to enhance absorption, and gently massage it into your scalp and through the lengths of your hair.
Regarding the smell, which can indeed be pungent, you might mix a few drops of essential oils like lavender or rosemary to somewhat mask it. Additionally, after washing out the oil with a gentle shampoo, follow up with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse. This can help neutralize the odor and add extra shine.
