how to apply indigo powder - #23906

Dylan

I am really curious about how to apply indigo powder. A few weeks ago, I decided to ditch the harsh chemical dyes for my hair since they were making my scalp really itchy and dry. A friend suggested indigo powder, saying it’s a natural alternative that works wonders. I got some from a local shop, but now I’m kinda confused. I read that I can mix it with henna for the best results, but how exactly do you apply indigo powder? Like, do I need to prep my hair in a certain way before applying? Should it be clean or dirty? And how long should I leave it on? My hair is pretty dark already but I want that rich color everyone keeps talking about. The packaging says to mix it with water but doesn’t give clear steps. Plus, I heard there are different methods, some people even add oils or lemon juice?! I just wanna get it right without ending up with a weird mess or green hair!! Any tips or experience with how to apply indigo powder would really help. Thank you!

Using indigo powder as a natural dye for your hair can be a great alternative to chemical dyes, especially if you’re dealing with scalp issues like itchiness and dryness. Getting started with it can be a bit tricky, but here’s a simple guide to help you through the process. First, it’s important to prep your hair properly. For best results, start with clean, dry hair. This helps the indigo adhere better to your hair, ensuring a more even and lasting color.

Before you apply indigo, use henna first. Henna is usually applied to completely colored gray hair and to create a base for the indigo. You’d mix henna powder with some lukewarm water (some people like to add a bit of lemon juice to release the dye but, it’s optional) to form a paste. Apply the henna paste thoroughly through your hair and let it sit for 2 to 4 hours, depending on your preference. Afterward, rinse it out without shampooing.

Once your hair is rinsed and slightly damp, you’re ready to mix your indigo powder with water to create a smooth paste. The ratio is usually about 100 grams of indigo powder to about 300 ml of warm water. The paste should be a nice, thick consistency—not too runny. Apply this indigo mix to your hair, working from roots to tips. To avoid any potential skin staining, it’s a good idea to apply a bit of coconut oil or petroleum jelly around your hairline and ears.

Leave the indigo on for around 1-2 hours. The longer you leave it, the darker the color may become. Remember, your hair’s natural color and condition can affect the final outcome, as indigo can be quite temperamental. After the indigo has set, rinse your hair thoroughly with water. You want to avoid shampooing right away, at least for 48 hours, to allow the color to fully set and deepen.

There are methods where people add oils or lemon juice, but sticking to the basic water mix for your first try might be the best approach to see how your hair responds. Once you get comfortable, you can explore other variations. Enjoy your new natural color and the process of experimenting with Ayurvedic hair care!
