I am wondering about mixing henna and indigo powder together. Recently, I started experimenting with natural hair dyes to avoid all these harsh chemicals. Mixing henna and indigo powder can be quite an effective natural way to color your hair when done correctly. The trick lies in understanding how each component works. Henna contains a reddish-orange dye molecule called lawsone, whereas indigo offers a bluish tint. When combined and applied properly, they can produce a rich range of colors, including dark auburnish shades, brown, or even black depending on the starting hair color.
For a dark auburn effect, a two-step process can be especcially helpful:
First, apply henna: Mix the henna powder with warm water to form a thick paste. Some people also add a bit of lemon juice or tea to help the dye release, but just warm water can suffice. Allow the paste to rest for a few hours or overnight to release the dye. Apply it evenly, covering all your hair, and leave on for a few hours before rinsing it out.
Next, use indigo: After rinsing the henna and drying your hair, prepare the indigo paste by mixing it with water right before use (indigo dye should not be left to sit as it releases quickly). Apply it to your hair in the same manner as the henna and leave it in for one to two hours, depending on the shade you desire.
Alternatively, mixing henna and indigo powder together is possible but might give less predictalbe results than the two-step method. If you wish to mix them, typically you’ll want to add roughly two parts henna to one part indigo for an auburn tint. However, the results can vary based on your original hair color and the quality of powders used.
