does oiling hair help - #24216

Thomas

I am really confused and need some advice. Lately, my hair has been super dull and dry, and I keep hearing people say that oiling hair helps. I started this whole oiling routine with coconut oil, but I don't really know what I’m doing, honestly. My friend said to do it every day, but that just feels like too much. Also, it feels kinda greasy after, like am I doing it wrong? I thought oiling hair helps make it shiny, but sometimes I feel like it just makes it look worse! I tried olive oil too, thinking maybe that would be better? My scalp gets oily really quickly, so I have no clue if that’s the problem or just the oil. I did like a patch test the other day 'cause I worried about irritation, and now I’m second-guessing if oiling hair helps boost growth or if it's totally not necessary. Ughhh, really hoping someone can help me figure this out. Is there a specific way to do this or is it more about the type of oil I should be using?

Oiling your hair can indeed be beneficial, but it’s more about how and what type of oil you use. Ayurveda sees hair health as a reflection of our overall health, rooted in our Prakriti and dosha balance. For many, oiling the hair nourishes the scalp and hair, reduces dryness and may improve shine. However, doing it correctly and choosing the right oil for your hair type makes all the difference.

Your scalp becoming greasy quickly might indicate an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which controls the oily nature. Oiling your scalp daily, especially with heavy oils, can sometimes exacerbate the issue if you have an oily scalp as it might overwhelm it. Instead, oiling 2-3 times a week is usually sufficient, allowing your scalp’s natural oils to work in harmony with your haircare routine.

Coconut oil is fantastic for nourishing and strengthening the hair due to its penetrating properties, but it should be used sparingly if your scalp tends towards oiliness. Olive oil can be good for adding shine and is lighter, but again, moderation is key. Warm the oil slightly before application as this helps in penetration and absorption. Apply to your scalp and hair, and leave it on for roughly 30 minutes to an hour before washing out with a gentle herbal shampoo.

Do a gentle massage when applying the oil, as it stimulates hair follicles and can promote growth. However, be cautious with vigorous massages if your scalp is sensitive or already irritated.

Stick with lighter oils such as jojoba or almond oil if the others feel too heavy. It’s also important to wash thoroughly yet gently to ensure all the oil is removed, which will prevent that greasy residue you mentioned.

In cases where you’re seeing increased irritation or ongoing issues like dandruff or significant hair loss, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional or Ayurvedic practitioner to look into the specific needs of your hair and scalp.
